i'm an avid reader too, and am going to 100 % recommend an authour that no-one else ever seems to have heard of, which is a crying shame - she is brilliant. Paullina Simons - she has written loads of stuff, all excellent books, but the best is one calld The Bronze Horseman - it's a love story set in Russia during the 2nd world war and is utterly tragic, hearbreaking, captivating...you will not be able to put it down, I promise. And the best part of this is that there are 2 sequels to it, so you get to find out what happens next...The worst part is that you cannot put it down so you'll be up all night! I have lent this book to dozens of my friends and family and every single person who read it has said it's just about their favourite book ever! I'm not exaggarating!
Also adore anything by Douglas Kennedy - especially the Pursuit of Happiness. Amazing.0 -
I really like Lesley Pearce books.....bit rude but a 'can't put down' book, I also love Jeffery ArcherOh....I'm not going to lie to you......At the end of the day, when alls said and done......do you know what I mean.........TIDY0

And... I'd like to recommend the Patricia Cornwell novels (Kay Scarpetta is the 'heroine' character in a whole series of books). A bit grisly in places but will keep you hooked.
I got into Patricia Cornwell after having read soooo many chick-lit novels, they all began to seem the same. I was looking for more ideas and inspiration, so thanks to all for this thread too!Homer: I want to share something with you, Bart: The three little sentences that will get you through life. Number 1: Cover for me. Number 2: Oh, good idea, Boss! Number 3: It was like that when I got here.0 -
And, forgot to say above, Lynne Truss is very good too, especially in 'With One Lousy Packet of Seed'. If you search on Google, it will pull up her non-fiction books first (Talk to the Hand / Eats, Shoots and Leaves) but there are a few wickedly funny novels by her too. If you like lighthearted comical chick-lit, make sure you try these! A bit different from the Marian Keyes genre and good for a change.Homer: I want to share something with you, Bart: The three little sentences that will get you through life. Number 1: Cover for me. Number 2: Oh, good idea, Boss! Number 3: It was like that when I got here.0

Just remembered Janet Evanovich - she writes crime, but they are soooo funny, they make me laugh out loud.......starts with "One for the Money" and goes right through to number 12, and I think there's a no. 13 in the pipeline :jI let my mind wander and it never came back!0

Will look for some of the recommendations next time I'm in the library.
While not in fashion.... Neville Shutes A town like Alice...much better than the film which is really only half the book. Also Trustee from the toolroom.
Also recommend:
Erica James,
Bryce Courtenay (Power of One and Tandia set in South Africa, The Australian Trilogy, Four Fires)
Maureen Lee- books set in Liverpool
Barbara Erskine
And one of my faves is Fannie Flagg. Not keen on Fried Green Tomatoes but her others are great.0 -

Another vote for Katie Fforde, I have read all of her books, they do get a bit "samey" after a while but great all the same. I also love Maeve Binchy and have just read a brilliant book called "The Dangerous dress" by Julia Holden. I am also a great fan of Joanne Harris and love all her books. Freya North is good too for chick lit. I always look on Amazon for recommendations then try to borrow them from the library. Don't forget Harry Potter too if you haven't read them yet, just as exciting for adults as children.0
