where is it safe to have an evening stroll abroad

we are looking for somewhere outside the eurozone for a break at the end of June, because of the time we're going it rules out the caribbean etc - so that basically leaves the med/ africa area. We want somewhere that is safe to go for a stroll after an evening meal - we went to Egypt last year & was not advised to leave the hotel complex & short beach front area, there were armed security all around. We've been advised that Tunisia is also not advisable for this - how about Turkey, we've been looking at possibly Olu Deniz??

That info about Egypt must have been about Northern Egypt, or some remote place in the Sinai.

Head to Luxor and stroll down the Nile.

I did it last month, it was safe, beautiful, and easily reached by Easy Jet from the UK.

Dont mistake hotels and tour operators wanting to increase profits for actually giving true advice.

I've had evening strolls around Egypt, Sri Lanka, India, Kenya (other than on safari where there is actually some danger of becoming something's lunch), Jordan, Oman, UAE and most of Latin America.

In Sri Lanka in particular they always advised never to go out or eat out at all but we went for several meals with our local guide and the only difference between what we had and what the hotel sold was beer in the local bar was 30p a bottle and £4.50 in the hotel (same brand)

Just being sensible in terms of wearing appropriate clothing for local customs and walkways, dont carry jewelry, smartphones, wallets etc and just have enough cash for what you're doing and a cab back.

    No problems in Croatia
  • my brother went to cuba a few years back, really wanting to go to havanna he booked a week with thomas cook (as an all inclusive was cheaper than return flights), as they were leaving for an overngiht in havana the local rep demanded they come back as it wasn't safe...

i've never has problems but i read up on an area before i go.. and listen to locals advise (excluding that of the tour reps on commission)

be carefull not to eat or drink away from your western tourist priced hotel as you'll realise how cheap a place can be..

morocco is good for an evening walk down the bizarres

The only time I've ever not been able to take an evening walk in safety was in India in 1990 where in some cities there was a curfew because of factional violence, everywhere else has been absolutely fine. You can't live your life in fear of things that might happen but probably won't (well, you can, but you won't find it much fun).

Luxor is a vile place for women - nothing but hassle, even for the most experienced of travellers. My hotel would send staff out if we needed anything as they acknowledged how bad it was.

I can recommend Olu Deniz, although I would not recommend going AI or half board at the hotel. There are some excellent restaurants in the area, that struggle to keep going because the (mainly foreign owned) hotels like to keep their guests inside. Any contributions to the local economy will see you welcomed like an old friend. ;)

I can also recommend Croatia and Morocco - Marrakech is a joy in the evening, although it will be very warm at that time of year.

Let's be honest - many Arabic countries are fairly vile towards women and quite a few in Europe as well, particularly Turkey.

Frankly if I was a woman the last place I'd want to holiday is somewhere they are considered and treated as second-class citizens.

I would second other posters suggestions' of Sri Lanka and Thailand - both wonderful countries with polite and friendly locals and perfectly safe to stroll around except for the odd tourist hell-hole like Phuket.

I disagree - this is the first negative experience I have had in an Arabic country. I don't look to the stereotype of a country, I prefer to form my opinions based on personal experience.
  • Thank you all for your replies - we went to Sharm for the 1st time last year, in fact our first time abroad in many years, we were surprised at the amount of armed checkpoints we had to go thru culminating in a security guard by a walk in body scanner at the front of our hotel. When we went out for a walk the first evening along the beachfront we discovered it only stretched for the length of the 3 hotels & was flanked each end by a security guard & no entry signs, we were back at our hotel within 30 minutes, the next day we asked the concierge where it was possible to walk to & he advised us strongly against it, with the added visual when on yr sunbed of the gunship going up & down the strait I'm in no hurry to go back. Quite a few different people have advised against Tunisia outside of a complex - I hate large complex/ hotels & need to be able to have a good walk, staying in the bar all evening holds no appeal
