OP I cannot believe how much !!!! your OH eats!

My husband used to play a lot of sport when we first met and had a huge appetite (and was very slim) but even he would never have eaten 4 Kievs and 2 large jackets in one sitting! I might of served him 2 Kievs, but only because they aren't 'proper' meat. One decent chicken breast would be nutritionally much better for him and probably as filling! Do you 'cook' or or do you just eat food you heat up (that is not meant as a criticism btw)?

You have seemingly taken control of your food intake, well done on the brilliant weight loss, so can you get your OH as inspired about good food as you are? Menu planning and cooking together? What if you set yourselves a challenge to eat only 'homemade' for a week (except bread / pasta etc) and see if he finds that more filling?

Oh and for the record, my formerly very slim OH is now 52 and there's a good 2 stone of him that I'm not legally married to :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

He sounds just like my brother.

Okay, he is a handy-man/builder/caretaker/maintenance (you get the drift) guy who is a beanpole and covers a couple of metres in each stride but seriously.

It's ridiculous how much he eats and still complains at great length that he's hungry and tired all the time. When his diet consists of porridge at home then a full English at work, entire trifles, 6 chocolate mousses, whole packs of chocolate biscuits and chocolate cakes he makes from boxes, I'm not surprised that he has no energy.

He knows full well that he needs to eat actual fruit and veg but refuses because he doesn't like it. And then he complains every day about how tired he is. Bah!
'til the end of the line

Maybe get him to have a large drink before his meal so that he will feel full afterwards, but not consume so many calories, I know if I have a glass of water before eating, I cannot eat as much as usual, but feel full for as long as I would have done had I eaten the extra food.

Your budget sounds ok to me - my OH and I will spend that for us two plus a cat!! We also do lunches with that - my OH will eat stuff if it's there - just because it's there!! So with that in mind I buy stuff he will eat but he knows when it's gone - it's gone!! But we are both in our 50s and have now started to watch things like salt intake and the like and I don't eat chocolate anyway but I do like a bit of cake with a brew!!
If all that's left is the not so nice stuff then at least you won't be stuck with it the next week!!
If he's eating the stuff that you like with no regard for you then you may need to leave it at work so you can have some treats too. Otherwise he may be eating through boredom or just plain greed but it does seem as though he is eating without thinking and is not actually enjoying his food. Maybe if he were to cook sometimes from scratch then he may actually reduce what he eats as this can take away the hunger gremlins!!
My OH used to lift weights as a young man and used to put away shed loads of food because he was body building - the muscles are still there and the six pack has become a beer barrel!!:rotfl:

Hi all! Just having a bit of a wonder!

My and my OH are constantly in a battle about how much he eats. We don't have any big arguments about it, but it is constantly causing us financial issues!

We spend £60 a week on food for just us and a small dog. Every week I HATE shopping because it costs so much. We also buy a whole months fresh meat from the local meat market for £40 and freeze it for dinners, so the £60 a week we spend maybe buys us a couple of extra dinners each week (a cheap pizza or something quick etc).

When I lived on my own I got my spending down to about £15-£20 a week for me and my dog, which included toiletries, cleaning products, dog food, lunches, breakfasts and dinners. I probably spent an extra £2-£3 a week on some chocolate or treats.

My OH just doesn't stop eating. He's very slender and muscular and has a very physically demanding job, so I understand he needs to eat more, but we are really getting to a point where we do a shop on a Monday, and by Wednesday we just have the not-so-nice food. I buy things for my lunches such as a multipack of crisps or chocolate bars and he'll eat them all by Wednesday. He was preparing his lunch the other day and I wondered into the kitchen to discover the following went into his lunch bag....

    8 brevita biscuits
    1 protein shake
    4 bags of crisps
    3 wagon wheels
    A pasta pot (large...!)
2 ham, cheese lettuce, mayo sandwiches (1 pack of ham per sandwich!!!!!!)

He then came home and ate:

    2 bananas
    Another protein shake
    A bag of crisps
    An energy drink
    Whatever leftovers he could find
    A slice of ham

    Then for dinner!:

4 chicken kievs, 2 large jacket potatoes with cheese and beans, veg.

    Then!!!!!!!

2 chocolate bars, bag of crisps and then whatever I left of my dinner. He went to bed saying he was hungry!!!

Not only am I worried that he seems to be cutting out all particularly nutritious food and that if he doesn't eat this much, he will lose weight quickly, it's also frustrating that the cost of feeding him is going up by the month.

I've suggested making a HUGE bowl of homemade pasta salad which would work out cheaper, which he'll do maybe once a week. He says he's bored otherwise.

I want him to eat what he needs, I don't want him to feel hungry all day, but this seems insane! Any tips?

P.S I'm currently about 5stone over weight and I'm trying to lose weight and it's maybe making me more annoyed that I'm depriving myself of all these lovely foods, whereas he doesn't appreciate them as treats or have any consequences. I am slightly resentful! :rotfl:

I do have to wonder - does he have a worm? yeeuuuch I know - but it does have to be considered - the amount he is eating and always feeling hungry? yet is thin and loses weight quickly.
There can be medical reasons for this - he needs to be checked out to rule these out!

His calorie intake isn't a problem, he is not overweight.

As has been said several times, most of what he's eating is junk, and expensive junk at that. £60 per week for two adults is not an excessive amount to spend on two adults per week and if you were spending it on good, nutritious food he wouldn't be hungry and hopefully you'd loose weight too. It's not the cost that's the problem, it's what you're buying.

4 chicken kievs for one meal? I seriously thought my OH was bad.

He definitely needs to be looking at foods that will keep him fuller for longer, stuff like weetabix or porridge in the morning, wholemeal toast with eggs, even something like kippers with eggs has to be better than Belvita Breakfast Biscuits.

If it were me, as time consuming as it is, I'd buy things that needed to be bought weekly (cereal, tins of things, anything for the freezer) and everything else I'd buy daily/every 2 days.

If you only buy 2 packets of crisps, a kiev each that's all that can be eaten. Yes it is more costly to buy single items but not any more than what you're currently spending.

From someone who has a close family member with severe heart disease, you cannot sustain a diet like that long term. It is bordering on dangerous.

Fair enough if he needs the food to fill him, but wise choices would go a long way.
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.
  • Maybe he could ask his GP to refer him to a nutritionist? If he genuinely needs a high calorie diet, he needs to know how to do that in a healthy way.
What he is eating at the moment seems downright frightening to me

This would really wind me up. Is he the sort of person who has to eat what's there, but not bother going out to get something?
