I'm TERRIFIED of saying, bound to bring on a breakdown of said item that I'm not mentioning. Any one else feel like that?

    Just me mad then.

    I'd say 7yrs is reasonable

I'm unsure how long I've had mine prob about 5/6

I just buy a relatively cheap one so that when it goes I don't have to spend half the cost of a new one to get it fixed, and just replace it

The cost of fixing machine is often quite high I agree. I'd asked around and the call out minimum is about £50. I have looked around at the costs of new washer dryers and £50 can get around 1/10th of a pretty decent new one.
  • My WM - Siemens - is 9 years old. Previous one Hotpoint - lasted 5 years.

My TD - Creda - is 4 years old. Previous one was a Hotpoint and that lasted 4 years.

I've only ever once had a washer / drier - never again... I couldn't tumble and wash at the same time so laundry took a lot longer to get through. By the way, this was a Hoover and I bought a five year warranty and the man came out 12 times in 5 years - it was a real pain as it was always the same wire that came undone.

I'd recommend a Siemens - they are more expensive but they do a good aftercare service with fixed cost repairs.

For electrical sales I'd always recommend John Lewis because they do a price match, free delivery and have generous warranties. Co Op Electrical are good as well on price and delivery.

I have already placed an order for a new one. Going for the one recommended by Which? Mag. Unfortunately JL doesn't stock and Co-Op is out of stock (and the small prints says it may be available from 7 to 28 days... 7 days sound OK but I really can't go without a washer dryer for 28 days!!!) so I had to go with Currys. I am surprised that Which? Magazine recommended four washer dryers and JL only stocks that integrated one. :(
  • My washer/dryer has just gone wrong (just over a week ago). Water started pouring out from the bottom (checked and tried the filter). The bearings were also going (loud clunking noises when drying). It was just under 3 years old! When ringing around for repair people, call out fee and then repairs were nearly the cost of a new washer. The dryer was only ever used for towels and took 3 hours to dry a load! We have just got a new washing machine that Ihope last few years. My old washing machine I gave to my parents when I moved house and there was already one in there. 9 years later it still works like new and is used daily!

Yeah mine died in pretty much the same manner. It was beeping, I tried to drain out the water, I pulled the drain pipe a bit hard and then water started flowing out from below. Since from about a year ago I have had to drain it for a few times, it tends to become problematic when I did too many loads in one day (like more than 2) so I guess the machine had given me ample warnings.

For drying, my old machine can dry 5kg at a time, I only put on the drying for around 40 minutes, which get the stuff pretty much 80 to 90% dry and I put them on clothes horse to do the final bit of drying. I am too stingy to pay 3 hours worth of electricity for the drying! :rotfl:

Got a new tumble dryer last year from coop, white knight british made so i hope will last a while. Washing machine is indesit, basic cheap model. No point paying any extra as we live in such a hard water area nothing last very well here.

DD got a secondhand washer for £75, only 2 months old from a house clearance for an elderly lady. Turned out to be a washer dryer that was nearly £600 new. Only realised when we tried to download the instruction manual.

Our washing-machine is a year old, replacing the one that died completely. The TD is about 4 years old, I think. We don't have a dishwasher.

Our WM is a cheap Indesit and is now 12 years old and still going strong. Our previous WM was also a cheap Indesit and was 10 years old when we moved, rather than take it with us we sold it to our house buyer for £50. In 50 years of marriage we have only needed one washing machine repairing and that was a Zanussi washer/drier. The repair man said that all washer/driers are prone to breaking down, so we never bought another one.

Our Indesit DW broke down after about 5 years and was repaired a couple of times. I was so fed up with it that we bought a Bosch DW next and after about 6 years this is still ok.

    I don't have a TD.
  • My washing machine is about two months old and it replaced an AEG that was nearly 11 years old. The AEG had a new motor fitted a couple of years ago and did still work but we decided that rather than pay nearly £100 to renew the insurance we would put that towards a new machine. We bought a Miele and took advantage of the offer to upgrade to a 10 year guarantee for £149. Our washing machine is on nearly every day and often does more than one load in a day.
My tumble dryer is about 9 years old now.
It is so much disruption when a washing machine breaks down that I always buy the best we can afford. We had a Zanussi and it lasted 3 years and needed a new drum because the bearings had gone. It was fixed under insurance and what it cost them they could have given us a new machine.

I don't normally post, but just had to share. My mum has just had a new tumble drier, the previous one lasted 41 years!!! Admittedly she didn't use it often. It was a zanussi. She also had a new chest freezer a couple of years ago, the previous one lasted 35 years. I think she had her monies worth.

Wow I am really impressed!! Bet your mum took really good care of that tumble drier and freezer to make them last so long.
