    3) Yep, thousands of male chicks die in the egg industry. calves die in the diary industry. We'd all prefer they didn't, but life isn't perfect. To say it isn't worth being veggie instead of vegan because of this, is kinda throwing the baby out with the bathwater. You can't avoid indirectly causing deaths of some creatures, so don't bother avoiding any that you would cause directly and eat and fill your boots with meat? Not very logical.

But not eating eggs & dairy because it very directly causes the death of a huge number of male animals is very logical and an extremely easy solution.

Vegetarians who say they are doing it for ethical reasons, but still eat eggs and dairy really annoy me.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

It's all to do with whether the animal dies as a result of obtaining the food. So meat (as you might say if you read the pamphlets) is murder, eggs that are unfertilised is not. Same as cheese, the animal provides milk and survives to live another day.

So eggs would be fine, jelly babies would not be fine as they contain gelatine which is made from the bones of animals.

But in order to have milk, the cow must produce a calf -- and there are far too many of those simply to maintain the dairy industry. The surplus goes to be fattened for slaughter to feed the meat, leather, jelly-products and lots of other industries. So if you're a "Meat is Murder" person, you should also be saying "Milk is Murder" and "Cheese is Murder".

Likewise with eggs -- once the birds are past their best laying age they are disposed of into the food chain and as much as possible of the carcass is used in various products. In order to have eggs, birds die -- so "Eggs are Murder"???

A "principle" veggie along the lines posted is someone who is squeamish but not consistent.

I have no problem with people who are veggie because they don't like the taste of meat, though I find that strange.

But those who are veggie because they don't like the idea of animals (be they mammals, birds, fish or other genera) being killed for food, but will eat animal products that don't directly involve the death of the producing animal, and wear leather, and so on, are closing their eyes to what's going on.

They can't really claim to be a veggie on principle unless they eschew every sort of animal product. The only consistent veggie is a vegan, but they're very hard to please!
  • I assume proper vegetarians are non-lovers of pastoral landscapes and non-arable farming, since those landscapes and farms are centred around farming animals.

So good vegans and principled vegetarians will never visit the hills of the Lake District, Peak District, Wales, Scotland, large parts of the Downs, the Mendips, the Weald, Lincolnshire Wolds ... ??? OK, I'll believe you ...

And they won't visit farms with animals on, because animals are only there to illustrate what would be found on a working farm, and those (working) animals are reared for their meat and other products or for their unwilling labour. And they won't bet on the gee-gees (not that I do: I have better uses for my limited cash!) ... and (well, how far do you go?) :D

I dislike the taste and the texture, so I don't eat it. Not sure why that would be any stranger than anybody else not liking the taste or texture of something. Haven't eaten meat for 24 years now. I would be peed off though if a restaurent/chip shop cooked vegetarian food in animal fat though.

  • My local chip shop has a sign up saying that everything is cooked in vegetable oil, but I would never have thought to ask if the oil was reused - the sign doesn't say.

Thankfully I am not a vegetarian and the fish & chips there are so expensive anyway  so not very MSE!

Why does someone choosing to not eat meat mean they must not like our landscape? It's not like one person turning vegetarian suddenly causes part of the national parks to be tarmacced. A very tenuous link there.

Food labelling shows ingredients ie whether the cheese has veg rennet in for example, it should be more accurate/regulated.

Exactly - just like this delicious Findus beef lasagne I'm tucking into. Hang on, why is there a horseshoe in here? ;)

That assumes vegetarians want everyone to go vegetarian. I know there's a few militants out there, but the majority don't really give a stuff what anyone else eats, and realistically the UK is never going to be 100% veggie no matter what anyone would like. Bit of a straw man argument.

Know to check whether it was reused oil

The chippies do not use fresh oil every day, It would cost too much to use new oil all the time
