Beamish Museum do this too and they are lovely.
I used to work for BK many years ago  and we used to cook the fries in the same oil as the chicken etc. Not sure if it is the same now tho.0 -

When I worked in a chippy, both fryers were used for chips at busy times anyway, and they were all mixed together when being stored before being served.
And the meat was. Just chucked in whichever fryer had the most space at the time.0 -
I was a strict veggie for many years, if going to a chip shop it was the first thing I would ask!0

Some chip shops do have a separate pan for cooking only chips. We did it was our small end pan so please ask your local0

Agree with pulliptears here, as when living in the Black Country most chip shops used beef dripping. It was usually obvious though as the chips were orangey coloured, and the smell was obvious.
It's not being fried in beef dripping that makes orange chips orange - it's actually a batter they are coated in before cooking. The only thing I miss about the Black Country since moving south is the orange chips!
Have to say I'm glad I'm not a veggie because animal products are hidden in all sorts of foods so it's an absolute minefield to be totally meat free. Even some wines use meat products in their production!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
God meant us to eat animals.
Otherwise he would not have made them taste of meat.0 -
It's becoming less common, unfortunately.
The fryers which can cope with dripping are more expensive and harder to clean. Dripping is more hassle to deal with all round so many newer chippys tend to just use oils.
I've worked with both, and the stuff definitely tastes better from dripping.
I believe it's pretty common not to have a sign up.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

Chips aren't battered: dripping does make a different colour, flavour and texture to other oils.
What really makes a difference, though, is the variety of potatoe. Shops generally can't guarantee the same spuds all year round, it can be very much luck of the draw.
