Saw a chippie on Alex Polizzi's tv show recently say that they put beef dripping in their oil but it wasn't written anywhere, does anyone know if this is a common thing in the industry?
Didn't realise it was something that needed to be checked!

My chippie only uses sunflower oil, they even have a notice up. But they do cook the fish and chicken in the same fryers and oil.0

Yes!
Worked in a chippy for 9 years. We used palm oil with one owner for years, then got bought out and switched to a palm oil / beef dripping mix. I was vegetarian at the time so stopped eating anything cooked in the oil.
We had no signs up to sy what the food was cooked in - the owners policy was that vegatarians should ask. Everytime someone ordered a vegetable pie/cheese and onion pasty/cheese and onion fry-it etc with chips I always used to ask them if they were vegetarian and warn them about the beef dripping. The first time I did this I got told off as a whole family left without ordered. The 2nd time the boss heard I got a verbal warning! left soon after that - without the perk or free chips working there didn't really appeal anyway.I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be0 -
TBH as everything is cooked in the same oil in a lot of chippies then I don't think it could be classed as veggie friendlyThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

They taste so much better when fried with the beef dripping.0

If I was a vegetarian (which thankfully and gladly) I am not, I think the chip shop would be the last place I would go to for something vegetarian.

Agreed. There is a chippy inside the Black Country Working Museum that cooks chips in dripping and serves them in newspaper. Good lord they are to die for!
I'm not a vegetarian, but if I was then I would ask in my local chippy because certainly in these parts chips are cooked in a dripping mix. I'd assume they weren't suitable.0 -

Agree with pulliptears here, as when living in the Black Country most chip shops used beef dripping. It was usually obvious though as the chips were orangey coloured, and the smell was obvious.
Now I live in Solihull a lot of the local chip shops don't use a beef dripping mix (much to my disappointment) however they do use the same oil to cook everything in, so not exactly veggie friendly.
I would say though, I assume it's the vegetarian's responsibility to check what they were fried in though. I know many veggies who wouldn't eat chippy chips due to meat being fried in it, as this would release animal fats etc into the oil anyway.0 -

Exactly, a deep fried battered sausage isn't going to be cooked separately is it? Nor is fish I suspect. It's common sense that a chippy probably wont be vegetarian. I suspect to actually be a veggie chippy would require a hell of a lot of work with separate fryers etc0 -
Know to check whether it was reused oil but didn't realise the oil itself would be an issue, half my family are veg and the ones that aren't definitely still wouldn't eat beef (hindus), will have to let them know to start checking! Lot of people will be disappointed if their locals do this,
no more chippie chips

but things like sausages and chicken have always been deep fried together with chips ???0
