There is an old myth that you always have to have the most up to date equipment with various 'whizzy' bits but, in reality, most people do not need them, they are just falling for the advertising jargon. Sometimes good solid high quality tried-and-tested equipment is the best choice, even if it is not leading edge any more.

That I can definitely agree with. My trusty AVO Model 8 multimeter (a 1970 update of a 1950 design) is still my most trusted piece of test equipment, despite having more capable modern equivalents.

I remember trying to explain to the apprentices what the parallax mirror was for.

Have ordered one of these up so it will be interesting to compare it with the likes of the Samsung Note and (when it arrives) the Google Nexus. At that price point it looks good value on paper.

I didn't realise you were a collector?

Do give feedback on it. I don't expect it to be perfect but at that price point its worth a look in respect of the ops budget.

I have just got 2 x Ainol (what a name!) Novo 7 Legends for kids. For £59 they are really nice little tablets. 4:3 ratio very similar size to ipad mini. not the quickest things but came with a nice clean ICS version and discreetly rooted. 800x600, 8Gb so saves me an SD card for now. Camera is supposed to be only 0.3MP that must be an error as it looks a lot higher to me, plenty good enough to Skype.

10mm thick with a nice white satin back. It even runs Real Racing 3 which must be one of the most taxing games available, very pleased with battery life goes for hours. Wifi range is good.

There are things you can do with cheap tablets to help them along, limit background processes to 3 or 4, turn down some of Android animations ect.

They may not be near as snappy to use as the ipad mini's that some of their friends have but they run all the same games just as smoothly so I can't see the point of spending £270 (on a child).

At the rate my nephews and nieces nick my tablets I do not have much of a collection :-)

At the minute I am looking at ways of improving information access in my businesses and tablets are an obvious technology to consider. So I have purchased many different types over the years (ever since the first iPad arrived). I am a convert but stability and reliability are the 2 main factors I look for - the worst that will happen is that I decide it is not for me and I give it one of my nephews/nieces.

A £150 10" tablet could be a good 'bonus incentive' give-away for the staff.

Having run Blackberry phones and Windows laptops, we are now on a program heading toward everyone on Samsung Notes. Big enough screen to use our database systems via a browser interface, small enough (debatable to me!!) to carry as a phone. We are waiting to see what email solution IT can come up with, its not Androids strongest ability (lack of decent clients).

will the 'bonus' be that you leave access to facebook and iplayer on the 'work' tablets? :D
