I've had a 16Gb Nexus 7 for 8 months but really could have managed with an 8GB.

Local storage is a non-issue for me as I don't store music on the device, delete a film after I've watched it etc.

Why would anyone want or need a microSD slot on a tablet in 2013?

Why would anyone not fit an SD slot when the cost is insignificant is more the point, if you want to excuse a policy designed to 'encourage' earlier upgrading and people being up-sold more expensive models 'just in case' as you can't fix lack of space with a £10 SD card that's your right. Personally I find card slots very important.

I got my 64gb Blackberry playbook on ebay for £90 and I love it. It feels well made, everything works, the camera and video playback are excellent... about the only think I can't do is Skype on it and it looks like that may be sorted with the next update (BB10). I can definately recommend them as a tablet. (If all els fails they are £129 at Currys etc)

Perhaps because they listen to music or don't want to delete every bit of multi-media straight after they have wtched it? What has the date to do with whether expandable storage is required or not?

The wording of your question is rather bizarre. You acknowledge that less than 8GB would not have suited you. Why does it seem strange that 16GB might not be enough for someone else?

Less than 8Gb would have suited me, I have maybe 2Gb of apps.

The ubiquity of fast streaming services nowadays precludes the usefulness of extra storage options in a tablet - at least for me - I don't see the point in a tablet with a microSD slot. And that's where the industry is heading, it would seen.

No, the industry isn't heading that way. Plenty of phones and tablets are available with card slots - more than aren't I'd estimate. Samsung, one of the biggest players, always includes one. The majority of companies who do not (Apple, Amazon and Google notably) have ulterior motives for not doing so - they want to make it difficult to use content not sourced from their ecosystem.

It's not easy to stream on a wifi device when a wifi signal isn't available. And wifi is far from ubiquitous yet.

hmm... I took my son to swimming training earlier, I passed the time watching one of the movies on my phone with headphones. Would have been a dull hour without my sd card, in the spectators area, no wifi, no 4G not even 3G barely 2G. How useful is fast streaming then?

Who mentioned phones? I certainly didn't.

And tablets with no microSD slot - iPads, Nexus etc. certainly outnumber those that do have one, which is where the industry is heading.

As I said, companies with a vested interest in making it difficult to consume media from anywhere outside their own ecosystem. The Nexus is sold at practically cost price for that very purpose (as is the Kindle Fire - below cost at the current CPW price), but there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I bought a cheap tablet from amazon and regretted it and ended up giving it to the kids and saving for an iPad which I love. Was tempted by the kindle fire though instead
