fibre cabinates installed so how long now?

Hi all,

My area has had the BT fibre cabinates installed and the open reach lot are working on the boxes and laying cables.

Just wondering from your past experience how long does it take to get it switched on? I notice the BT wholesale site doesn't even mention fibre at the moment for our area, yet it's clearly coming.

Clearly I know these are all estimates but just wanted your opinion on this.

The cabinets where I live, were installed around March 2012 (the date bt said the town was due fibre). But I think there was a problem with the power cables, and was delayed for just over 6 months. Sorry if it's not what you want to hear.
  • No that's good to know that it doesn't mean it's going to happen quickly. I know they have connected up the power at the boxes as I have seen where they have dug up and wired up to where the street lights must be sourced from.
  • So if the power issue goes OK I'm guessing this roll out doesn't take too long?

Ideally would love to get off my 8meg and onto fibre.

Why don't you ask one of the OR engineers doing the work?

What is the expected date when you put your telephone number into the BT Wholesale checker?

Until they flag it on their website, you'll only be disappointed as they rarely have the same commissioning regime as the cabinets are usually installed before the fibre is laid.

Incidentally, you don't get any fibre - just the same copper you always had - don't believe the hype!

The expected date according to the website is March 2014, however surly that cant be correct as would they install all this stuff and not switch it on for a year?

BT guy told me there are 2 systems.
    1. fibre to cabinet
    2. fibre to home

We have No 1, it raised our download speed from 3-4 mb to 9-10 mb.
Upload speed went up from 0.5 mb to 0.8mb
We live about 1 km from the exchange.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

That is the same date as my area, which was originally March 2012-now showing March 2014!
Unfortunately I think you'll find that when a date is unknown, they use a distant default date (such as March 2014), and then adjust it back as that date draws near. My FTTC date has been revised 5 times now, and each time it usually goes back another 3 months. But in Dec 2013 it went back to March 2014.
Though if that date were genuine, it seems odd that they would be doing the work on your cabs now.

YAWN! Still flogging that old dead horse.

Customers will get fibre to their cabinet, which is a darn sight more fibre than they had before. Generally more fibre than copper.
