Personally, I don't have much knowledge of the BNP, so I, for one, would be interested to attend one of these things and hear what they have to say for myself, rather than paying attention to chinese whispers and tabloid papers.

That having been said, I'll go on a minor ill-advised/ill-informed rant in any case...

Sadly, for the lefties among us, they're going to have to start paying a little more respect to the BNP and the like. A large number of people in this country are growing tired of the overpopulation, soft justice and crazy benefits 10 years of liberal government has caused and are looking for answers.

None of the "big three" parties offer anything like a proper right wing position, so these people are forced to look further right and end up in and around the BNP.

That being the case, the days are drawing to a close when they could be dismissed as "racist nutters"...It seems for many normal people now, the BNP represents the party that has policies most closely aligned with their views.

The problem with the BNP is that many decent people in the UK have genuine concerns regarding the issues of immigration and how poorly it has been policed by the current government.

The BNP have hijacked these concerns and have put forward a twisted and perverse ideology that 99.99% of the UK citizens would disagree with.

If mainstream political parties would address the issue of immigration is a sensible manner then the BNP would become history. However unfortunetly when someone mentions controlled immigration they are called a racist so I believe as a society we are not mature enough to have this discussion. Therefore as long as our immaturity prevails so will elements such as the BNP.

Of course people should be left to make their own views and decisions, it just happens to be that those with the most distateful thoughts can often be the most persuasive as they tap into people's secret fears.

Exactly, and if they are left to prey on people individually or on street corners they can play on peoples fears. However if they are allowed to speak in a large forum with others countering their views, then people may see their fears are unfounded and there are other options.

I suggest you take a look at the BNP Wikipedia for some indepth knowledge, or maybe not if you have a weak stomach like me.

The violence and criminal behaviour section is illuminating too.

The Facism and the BNP section gives lots of info on the all sorts of Hitler sympathising etc violent organisations linked with the BNP.

I just hope no one is suggesting that Hitler being given a forum to spread hate is a good thing, does anyone remember the result of that...

I bow out of this thread now, as having just checked the BNP entry myself I feel totally disgusted at the abhorrently violent and harmful deeds done by sympathisers with this party.

I do not wish to give any more air time to them personally.
I always wanted to be a procrastinator, never got round to it...

Hitler was suppressed by the German government at the time and jailed for organising a march/coup against the Weimar Republic. Maybe things would have turned out differently if there had been open debate...

As I've said previously, driving things underground often gives them more power in the end.

Wikipedia really doesn't give very balanced arguments on things. I'd imagine most of the contributors to the BNP entry would have their own unsavoury motivations.

If you consider any fringe party you can draw comparisons with the past. How about we compare the communist party to Stalin?

Maybe you should look at the Wikipedia entries about Respect or the SWP too.

All of these extremists have shocking views, but what is truly abhorrent is the bias nature in which students' unions discriminate between them!
