Can I join in?
I am always trying to cook cheap yet healthy meals. Currently my shopping bill is around £60-£80 per week depending on if I need other household bits like washing powder etc. I also have two children in nappies!!
I can certainly post a few recipe ideas if needs be.0 -
The idea for this is great, there is only one of me and bf part of the week, so if I could do my weekly shop for half of that, ie 15 quid I would be a very happy bunny indeed!
I look forward to seeing the menu plans, etc.0 -
I need to get back into this shopping cheap but healthy lark. Just because one person doesn't post...doesn't mean the rest of us can't give it a good go. We are 2 adults + 6 month old.
Recently I bought 15 days worth of meat for £20 from Tesco & Somerfield ...aim for £1.50 on meat per meal...average so far £1.34. If the meat costs more than that I've either got to offset it with some very cheap stuff. Or i leave it on the shelf. This should mean a maximum of £10.50 on meat each week. I have chicken fillets, sausages, beef burgers (not healthy...but cheap), mince and a pie from somerfield...and pork loin from Tesco. Would also buy a couple of chickens from Tesco....but no room. Also considering a beef joint, but I'm not sure if a a £3 one would meet my meat aim. May just have to try.
Have potatoes in the shed....so that's sorted. Plenty of fruit & veg in the cupboard. On this one i have worked out how many I need to get per £1 for it to be cheap at supermarket...otherwise I wait until the weekend and the market.
Have enough cakes for OH's lunch boxes for quite some time (Tesco have reduced the ones he likes down to pennies so I've been stocking up).
Enough nappies to last around 3 weeks + a set of slightly bigger nappies just in case. Milk powder for 1-2 weeks (Lidl made a mistake on their pricing so I got a tin 70p cheaper than normal).
OH has value cheese, meat, value yogis, crisps and bread (either cheap or home made) in his lunch box...all of which I have plenty of.
So when I go shopping I need...erm...erm...erm....nothing. No shopping trips for me then.
True test will come once my stocks run out.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
Lily contracted Strep B Meningitis Dec 2006  Now seemingly a normal little monster.

i have just been on the tescos website to get some prices.... as i dont shop there anymore.... but as i know a lot of people do..i thought i would use their prices as the basis of a weeks shopping and recipes....
i have been trying to keep the basket price at £29.99 so you only spend £29.99 per week...including flour. butter...etc but i tell you what ...i dont know whether it can be done for a family of 2 adults 2 children.... for the entire weeks meals.. breakfast.. lunch.. and main meal...
as i am putting basic food in the basket for evening meals... lunch, breakfast including the bread, milk, butter, flour etc... and there is hardly any fruit.... veg is sorted.... so i think i will have another look tonight ..
as i feel that this challenge is to only spend £29.99 and only taking it that you have basic store cupboard things.... but they will need to be bought once run out.. so i feel that the budget should include those items when needed...
edit... just to clarify my way of thinking about this..... is that if i only had £29.99 to pay for the weeks food......so if i didnt have any flour left i would have to buy the whole bag of flour not just calcalate how much lets say 8oz to make a crumble ,... hope that makes sense...Work to live= not live to work0 -

Hi
In theory I have worked out that I should be able to shop for a lot less, but in reality I spend at least £75 a week. If I go to Lidl/Aldi it always ends up that it goes on top of my shop.
Help!!! I buy lean mince as we are always trying to loose weight. I have 1 very fussy 14 year old and 1 not quite so fussy 9 year old myself and husband. 7 cats and a big dog0 -
Perhaps the OP sat down and realised that it is very difficult to create a healthy, sustainable diet for 4 people on £29.99. I think Black Saturn does it but she admits to not eating much fruit and vegm due to digestive troubles, and has to resort to supplements. I spend at least half of that on fruit, veg and diary so I dont stand a chance but I would be interested to see if anyone does come up with a healthy, 5 a day and sustainable diet on this budget.
Good luck!NSD 0/150 -
hi..fivenations......
i spend nearly all yearerday and evening.... trying to do a weeks food menu.... breakfast... lunch ( which was sandwiches.. for all 4 ) and evening meal..... and i managed to do it.. except for 2 days worth of lunches
( sandwiches)..... but to be honest it was lacking in the amount of fruit and veg....9 plus my imagination isnt that good ...lol....
this was going by the prices on tescos website.... plus assuming that you have allready got store cupboard ingredients......plus the portions would have to be watched..
if you like i can compile it properly and post in the next day or so..... just to get the ball rolling......i will also troll through some previous threads.. to see if the are recipes that could be uswed to keep to this budget of £29.99
i would also like to know how did bukup come to this figure as it does seem an odd amount of start with £29.99
or maybe it so happened that one of their weekly shopping recipts was that amount.....and thought they did do a weeks meals for that price.. but then realised there was found used that they allready had....
but hay..... its made us all think...Work to live= not live to work0 -
I'm thinking out loud here so bear with me;)
There wouldn't be much variety but eating from BOGOF and any special offers, 2 for 1 that sort of thing, could it be done for £29.99
So lets says for example sausage were bogof, you get two packs, cook one pack week 1 and then say the other pack week 3, cornbeef bogof, again 1 tin week 1 the other week 3 or whenever thus getting two weeks worth of shopping for the price of one. I think it would have to be the very basic of foods, and the cheapest and you wouldn't have to be too concerned about what went into them. By only buying bogof I think this surely would have to reduce the amount spent.
