I totally agree with that. That's what I did in my meal plan and it's bloomin' hard isn't it? I even had to cut out the 'alternative choice breakfast' of peanut butter on toast as cheap as it was, as it blew me over budget...
But shopping around I can get the bits much cheaper as we have a really good local butcher who either matches Mr T for price or is cheaper and is MUCH better quality. But I have no idea if others can get the same near them, hence sticking to Mr T
An exampl of how much cheaper you can get things is that our butcher sells a whole lamb, cut however you want for £40, and the quality of meat... he makes the sausages and mince meat behind the counter so you can see EXCATLY what's gone into it
That and the fact that I can by huge amounts of apples, oranges, and bananas each for £1, so the fruit cost would go down, and you'd get more in for the week tooApril 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -

But the thread is 'feed' a family of four. Not wash their clothes, let them be clean and have something to wipe their a*se on!0 -
hi... shortie ....
i totally agree with you with getting better quality for your money at the butchers etc..... when i started the month without supermarket challenge... my food bill def went down....
i still dont use the supermarket if i can help it, and if i do its the co-op.....( did have to go into mr t once  )
i will post the menu i done using tescos ,
but as i said earlier maybe bukup.. done a weekly shop and it came to £29.99, but then realised she had used other main ingredients allready bought...Work to live= not live to work0 -
No offence cupid - I just read it differently that's all I thought that all in meant all shopping. You do amazingly well on your budget I wish I could do 1/2 as well .0

Sorry, reading back now my post sounds rude
Didn't mean it to lol. The 'all in' bit confused me but I thought it'd be easier to manage on the budget not to include toiletries so I ignored that bit!
I spend more than that to be honest (about £90 pm for the 2 of us plus kitty but that includes cleaning stuff/loo roll etc as well). I just thought that the £29.99 would be quite do-able so wanted to work out what you could actually do with it. It was only when I decided to do the initial post that I realised I am really still quite bad when it comes to food shopping because judging from what we actually eat and pricing it up the £55 that my shopping list came to should have been enough for the month and that wasn't even taking into account the reduced items we always seem to find.
But considering I used to spend about £150pm before finding MSE I'm doing pretty well I suppose.0 -
hi everyone
i have lurked on this and other forums for ages and picked up loads of tips, but very rarely post. I was inspired by this thread so have spent some time trying to come up with a plan that will cover all food and the basic essentials for the house/toiletries for a week. Have come in on budget (just about!) but have probably forgotten some things!
In the hope of finally giving back a small amount of the help I have received on this site, here it is....
I have assumed that herbs/spices/flavourings etc, gravy powder, salt, lemon juice, golden syrup are in the store cupboard and have allowed £1 per week for replenishment
BREAKFASTS - every day
Porridge and/or Toast with peanut butter
Orange juice
LUNCHES
1.cheese salad sandwiches
2. egg salad sandwiches
3. egg salad sandwiches
4. tuna pasta salad
5. chicken soup, bread
6. baked beans, toast
7. tuna mayo sandwiches
In addition I would make a Victoria Sandwich, flapjacks and scones (1 each per day) and have apples, pears bananas and satsumas available (2 piece of fruit each per day)
DINNERS
1. Roast chicken potatoes stuffing cabbage carrots and roast parsnips
2. chicken curry, rice
3. sausage meatloaf, yorkies potatoes fried onions and baked beans
4. lamb and lentil minty casserole, couscous, cabbage
5. pasta , hm tomato/herb sauce, veg
6. hm quiche, hm wedges, hm coleslaw
7. hm pizza, hm chips, peas
Also I have allowed for toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, toilet rolls, bleach, stardrops (of course!!!) and washing powder. There is a packet of chocolate digestives for those times when only chocolate will do and I come in at a grand total of £29.79
I have costings and recipies (of sorts - I'm a bit of a chuck it all in and see what happens type of cook!) if anyone wants them
Hope it helps someone

Thanks Cathy... was very interesting to read your post. This is similar to what we eat/allow .. I have coffee/tea/1 bottle wine plus nappies/wipes on top, I allow for jam and marmalade (buy the large jars and these last us 2-3 months), a bag of crisps (pack of 30 per month) and a bar of chocolate for each of us (we do like our sat night treat!!) and with those extras we come in at around £50/week.
could I have the recipe for your lamb and lentil minty casserole pls0 -
