I believe most jobs come with healthcare which includes healthcare for all the family. It would have to be an absolute prerequisite before moving there

And if your husband lost his job and couldn't get another, could you manage healthcare costs then?

I would also look at what position you would be in if your marriage broke down- could you get yourself and the kids back to the UK?

I don't mean to suggest anything but my Mum was in that position with us, she was all alone in the US without any allies and it was hard. But we were able to get back.

Haha, no the in laws are at the opposite end of the spectrum from mine, ie. they don't really care all that much about us. we wouldn't be moving to be closer to them. More just a starting point if we move there.
Fair point re healthcare - I would want to work too though and if everything went wrong we would still have a home in the UK to come back to.

Have you looked into schooling for the kid's out there, others will know far better than me but I have a niece over there & the education sounds terrible. (I am not saying it is like that everywhere, just do a bit of research first) good luck.

Good you are thinking through all the pros and cons. I would be worried that the kiddies would miss their grandparents terribly (or would they?) how old are your children? perhaps mention to them the possibility of you moving and see what their reaction is?

Bagpussbear - they are 3 and 1 so even if it was a few years from now, they would be young enough to get over moving away from grandparents.

I agree Caevans, probably younger is better isn't it.

The schooling is way better there than here...

We have used http://www.greatschools.org/ to determine which school board area to move to.

I use http://www.thefloridaforums.com/ which although it specializes in Fl they do cover other states and have members that will give free impartial advice covering all visa aspects.

All the Americans I know including some who moved here say that in general the state schools there are not that great, also compared to here so private is the way to go but obviously that's pricey.

strange we have spent about 8 months researching schools and the studies in the USA and found it to be a whole lot better than the UK...even the state schools.
