Eon did send me a revised statement

But it still makes no sense to me.

Also it still shows an actual reading when the bill last year showed it as estimated.

I may be cynical here but could it be something to do with Eon not having read the meter and they are supposed to have done?

Had yet another email asking me to give them a meter reading.

I replied saying I think they should read the meter after all this time without it actually being read.

Got an email replying saying they had not been able to gain access(please do not insult my intelligence!!) asking for suitable dates for them to come.

What is the point of that when the email address they sent it from says "do not reply"!!

Time to vote with my feet I think.

    Hi POPPYOSCAR

Sorry for the delay replying. Been out of the office of late.

We'll be happy to come and read your meter. If you give us a call, we can set up a mutually convenient time to visit.

If you'd like a quicker resolution and to possibly help in the future, we'll be happy to take your readings over the phone. We can then re-bill any estimated bills to actual readings. This will make sure the account is up to date.

Alternatively, you can pop the reading online.

I suspect the 'do not reply' email is the automated request for a meter reading. These go out once the account goes into what we call the billing window. For quarterly customers, this is a period 14 days either side of the next bill date.

If this is the case, entering a reading online whist this window is open will automatically create a bill to the reading provided.

Readings entered outside of the billing window are recorded but don't result in a bill. Unless, that is, you select the option to create a bill yourself. This is known as real time billing and can be used, if needed, to produce an accurate bill whenever you wish.

    Hope this is of interest.

No it was in response to an email I sent requesting they come and read the meter.

Also I have tried to get a quote on line for the best tariff to be on and even though you supply to my address I get this "We are sorry but we cannot match the address details you've provided to a property"

When I ring the number given I get a message saying the service is unavailable.

    Hi POPPYOSCAR

I'm sorry you're struggling to use our online quote tool.

From the message you're receiving, it sounds as though there's a discrepancy in the address details we currently hold for you.

If you let us know your full postal address, we'll correct whatever's wrong. This will let you use the quote tool.

Eon have finally read my meter today - see it was not hard was it !! he said he had a key but when we showed him our key he did not have one!!

I am however still concerned that they have my meter down as having been read earlier this year on the statement( but not on the bill at the time!!), as it has not been read probably well over 2 years now, if not longer.

Is there a legal requirement for meters to be read in a certain period of time.?

I can think of no other reason why the statement changed but they left at least one "Actual" reading showing despite me telling them that no one had been to read the meter. Or am I just being cynical!!

    I do see where exactly?

I put my postcode in and it brings up all the house names, I click on my house name.(all these details are the same on the bill).

    Where can the discrepancy be?

That is just self-justifying flim-flam and, once more, it seems to suggest that OFGEM was somehow involved with what was a commercial decision to impose standing charges. OFGEM was not involved.

To disavow Ofgem is silly. To suggest that one of the big six suppliers can somehow ignore the idiotic reintroduction of standing charges is silly.

The supplier can only carry four tariffs. Why are you (or me) more important than other customers? Why is a no standing charge tariff more important than, say, a social tariff for pensioners and the disabled who have a high consumption? It is not possible to reduce yourself to carrying just one variable and one fixed tariff when every other supplier will have a choice of four.

Ofgem and Ofgem alone who have decided to remove two-tier tariffs from the system.

I have a rental property which barely breaks even, and it was untenanted for a short period last year. In that time I used 27p of electricity - 2kw - in vacuuming and cleaning the place. E.ON charged me an extra £70 standing charges - for doing nothing. Apparently if I hadn't used the 2kw of electricity, then I wouldn't have had to pay anything, but if you only use 1kw even, then they'll charge you a standing charge every day. Apparently this isn't thievery though (although I'm not sure how else they justify charging £70 for doing nothing) because the government said it's okay. Well if *politicians* say it's okay it must be....NOT.

It's all very well to talk about making bills easier for the consumer to understand, but I'm completely at a loss as to how to understand them charging £70 for 2kw of electricity.

e.on's standing charge is about 25p a day. The property must therefore have been unoccupied for approaching 9 months, not that short a period I would have thought.

The standing charge is designed to recover costs for maintaining supply. If you want to offer future tenants the luxury of electricity, then keep paying. If not, get e.on/local dno to shut off supply and remove the meter.

OFGEM (not quite politicians but I see your point) did indeed decide the British public were too stupid to understand 2 tier tariffs, and banned them:

    https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/simpler-clearer-fairer

ebico still have 0 standing charge tariff (albeit with a very high unit cost), however with loads of zero users it remains to be seen how long they can keep this going. Zero users do cost the suppliers money....hence the standing charge.

If the property is barely breaking even, may I suggest increasing the rent?
