    Hi kennyjosiah

Whilst quite a bit of the stuff I posted two years ago hasn't changed, thought I'd just try to clarify a bit. Can't speak about British Gas, though. This is something you or your daughter will need to take up with them.

From our side, although we try to see meters more frequently, we only need to do so at least once every couple of years. Even if meters aren't being used, we still have a duty of care to make sure they're safe and fit for purpose when needed. The standing charge covers this as well as maintaining equipment outside of the property like cables and pipework. This, in turn, helps keep properties connected to the electricity and gas networks so the energy is available when called for.

Most of our customers are billed quarterly, although in some cases we send bills/statements monthly, six monthly or yearly. It depends on when and how the account was set up as well as the results of a credit check. Customers can, though, change tariff/supplier at any time. This can be done either over the phone or online through our website. I'm sorry if you spoke to us about this and it wasn't done. If this is the case, we'll be happy to set up a payment arrangement to spread the outstanding balance over a more manageable period.

Some of our cheaper, contracted tariffs have certain tie-ins including cancellation fees. We're unable to put customers on to these tariffs automatically as we need to make sure they agree to these terms first. We're only able to routinely put customers on to non-contacted tariffs as these give them the flexibility to switch supplier at any time without penalty.

Sorry again if we didn't do as you asked when you spoke to us but hope this clarifies things a little.
