Does a long distance relationships work?

Are all your friends and family in Plymouth? Would you be happy to uproot and be so far away from them with your partner being the only person that you know in Manchester?
A few friends have made similar moves and found it very hard. They found that their social circle consisted of their partner's friends and it was hard to carve out their own identity and friendships and social life in the new city. Your partner can't be your whole life, no matter how much you love them, and one of them found they felt very isolated and adrift when the relationship ended. She came 'home' as soon as she possibly could.
Edit: Cross posted! What about friends? Other family? No support network at all where you currently live?0 -
Thank you
Nothing is tying me to plymouth. My parents now live abroad. So I'd happily move to ManchesterThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
There used to be a company called Freewheelers where you could find someone who was going the same way as you want to go and just pay the driver some money for the petrol. That way the driver gets petrol money for a journey they were going to make anyway, and the passenger gets to ride in the comfort of a car for the journey, but doesn't have to pay very much ££ in fares.0

I live with someone from work, It sounds really bad I don't have many friends. (Was bullied in school) My best friend went to Cambridge uni then moved there when she met a guy at uni, so I hardly speak to her.
I understand what you are saying don't get me wrong. I just need to think hard!0 -

Megabus is a whole day but if I had to I would go on there. I'd do anything to see him0 -
You've known each other for 8 months and see each other twice a month? Proximity is the only way you'll discover if you like each other on a day to day basis, or not. Proximity is what you don't have at the moment, and proxmity is the glue that sticks people together.
Did you find each other on the internet?.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

As much as LDRs are a pain in the rear end, they also have their exciting element which was seeing each other for the first time in a couple of weeks.
Mr Skintski moved in with me in July 2011 having lived 235 miles away. We'd been together 8 months when he made the move and we've never looked back and are due to be married in November.
Stick with it if you think he is worth it. You only get out what you put in.0 -

2 times a month is average. Sometimes I see him every weekend. All depends on shifts.
I've spent a few weeks at his and they were great. I want more of them0 -
In my view LDRs only work when there is an end in sight and one partner will move to be with the other. I had one LDR fail and vowed never to have one again, I then met my partner (he lived in London i in Manchester) and within a week both of us were saying we'd move for the other. He ended up moving to be with me and we've now been together three years.0
