    I wonder what's happened there?
OP, do you require a basic PVR, or a PVR giving you on-demand services via your broadband connection?
If the former, a basic Humax Freeview PVR will do the job. If the latter, you need a Humax Youview PVR.

Thank you for all of your advice, I've seen a Goodmans in Tesco for less than a Hundred pound, I think I will go with that unless you say otherwise?

So if you don't want on-demand programs, then all you need is a basic PVR. I'd still opt for a Humax over any other brand but if you want the cheapest option then go for something else.

...That would be my first link then. The Goodmans might be Good, but could have slow or quirky menus or a bad remote etc.

I'm not going to stand for this latest price rise that Sky has told me about. In anticipation of naffing me off (after the end of Grey's Anatomy;)) and not getting a better price from them over the phone, I'm researching my options. One thing that really is a viable option is a Humax freesat box with freetime. There are a few questions I'd like answering first:

Will it need a wire linking to my modem just to pair it up, and then afterwards will it be wifi connected (no cable) or is the cable always needed?

Will it record Netflix? Will it need to?

Is there an option to record (or at least display) subtitles for hard of hearing?

Any recommendations as to the model or even alternatives would be sincerely appreciated.

Netflix is an on demand service, why would you ever need to record it?

If the box is wi-fi enabled, it'll stream over the wi-fi. If not you'll need to connect via ethernet, or use a pair of Homeplugs if the distance is impractical for an ethernet cable.

    Sky increase = £3 a month.
Humax box equivalent to your Sky box = £100+

Months to pay off Humax box: 33 (over 2 years).
Yes you wouldn't have to pay the Sky subscription service but if that's your main driver behind this move, then there's no need to confuse the issue.

But not only avoid the £3 increase but the total Sky bill so payback time much less.
