Get the iPad Mini WiFi version £269 (Tesco, John Lewis, PC World, etc).
The missus and myself grabbed one yesterday from Tesco and love it! Perfect size for everything; games, reading, browsing, emails, etc.0 -
.................................or pick up a 16Gb wifi Nexus 7 for £160, saving over £100.That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Already had a Nexus 7 when they came out a year ago, sold it a few months ago. I like the Android OS but it's just not as nice on a tablet, better on the phones. iOS seems much smoother and slick to use on a tablet. My opinion anyway at least!0 -
Do you want 3G or wi-fi version-that's the first decision to make? Then screen size-standard or mini?
Don't want 3G.....then your tied into a contract are n't you, don't want any more outgoings. On a pay as you go phone with free monthly texts, that does me.
So wi-fi and standard screen as my eyes are n't so good nowadays.
Think I've more or less made my mind up to get a ipad retina display wi-fi 32gb from John Lewis to get the 2 year guarantee.
Bear in mind I don't know what I'm doing (middle-aged gran)
Do you think that's a good choice ?0 -

No, you can buy PAYG data SIM's.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

You can use pay as you go SIM cards. giffgaff do one month data only packs (gigabags) starting from £5 for 500MB.
I suggest a visit to a John Lewis store where you can compare the models side by side to see what difference the retina display makes. How do I add a signature?0 -
Oh right, that gives me something else to think about...thought I would have to be tied into a contract.0

The 3G versions are perfectly suited if you're out and about and dont want to mess with free wifis, secuity wise, but also because some come with catches, ie buying food, or sitting in places like a McDonalds.
As has been said you could get PAYG data sims really quite cheaply, if you dont already have a smart phone where you could create your own wifi.
You don't need to have a valid sim in the ipad to use it, so you could only buy a sim as and when needed, like a 30 day 1gb if you're out and about in the country (not the same deal as going abroad though). Otherwise the rest of the time you can use on Wifi, in your house, or others etc.
pop into the john lewis, view the 2 against the newest one and see about screen size, the you can either go for a cheaper model (2) if you're happy, or go for the dearer one if you really do notice the difference.
Decide about the 3G or not, then bob's your uncle!0 -
I think I'm confusing myself now, just looked at the John Lewis website and they give you a free EE4G sim card but then gives the option to have £15.99 per month rolling contract.
As I'm sure I'm only going to use my ipad at home I don't think I will need this plus its another £100 difference in cost.0
