The nutter is driving us out of our flat, but will he stop us selling it?

  • Hi I am new to posting here, but I would like to help if I can. I lived in a house converted into flats. I have been driven out by abusive neighbours - over a period of more than three years I called the police, housing etc many times. I won't go into details, but in the end I felt I was a paranoid complainer, and I'm sure the authorities thought that.
Nothing helped and only made the situation worse. In fact the NFH (a nasty twisted older woman, with a voice like a creaking gate in a gale) just laughed and said "police don't work".
I thought it was personal attacks against me, so I rented it out. Big mistake. They have driven out two sets of tenants, both of which I let leave early.
I am now going to auction the property, as I just can't stand any connection with the place any longer.
Your neighbour certainly sounds incredibly sinister, which from my experience, I don't think will improve. If this is what he has done to previous occupants, then he will be very practised at it, mine were.
So, if your situation is in anyway similar, I would say just sell and move on.
Good luck with everything, and I wish both you and your husband well.

    Ear plugs?

Pop down each and every time he makes a racket as although he's a coward and won't open the door, it shows that you are going to stand up for yourselves?

    Get EH involved?

there is a bloke at work who does the exact same, he seems to get some kind of sad kick getting on people's nerves, He also brings in the smelliest food you can think of! including out of date tinned fish! The more he gets on someone's nerves the more he does it. If he's sharing an office with someone who's always moaning they are cold he will open the windows and turn the aircon on full blast, and vice versa. If it's him your living next to I feel for you!

If that were me then there would be an office game where everyone has an action that they have to try and make him do. So one person pulls 'opens window' out of hat - they pretend to be really cold. First one to get him to do the action gets a prize. If he ever found out about it then he'd be going crazy trying to figure out if he was being annoying or getting someone a prize.

Try visiting the NFH forum (neighbors from hell).

There are legal remedies for this sort of thing. They take a while but can be effective. I've seen a number of circumstances where harrassing neighbours have been given ASBOs, you can apply for those in the civil courts.

You will need to keep records. If I were you, I'd start a diary up and also try to record the sounds.

Although I would have started doing that months ago to be honest, I wouldn't blame you if you didn't have the restraint to deal with things in the 'right' way.

After so long, maybe selling will be a breath of fresh air anyway.

You say that he sends you 'notes' .. Does he personally deliver them - if so does he deliver them to a pattern or irregular times?

Would it be possible to place a motion sensor outside of your door somewhere to alert you of his approach then you could time it to open the door upon his arrival and get a face to face with him.:)

Don't send him anymore letters regarding the banging as you are showing him that you are bothered by it.

What I would do is next time he starts this banging is phone the police and tell them that you haven't seen your neighbour for x. Amount of time. And that you are concerned that he may be ill. You can hear him banging which you think is for help. Let the police come. And break down the door if they have to that will shock him into thinking twice about doing this again.

    These people are a nightmare.

OP, please please please PLEASE try this approach an let us know how it turns out!
  • Maybe a bit of reverse psychology will work. Try acting as if you are really concerned about him, this will throw him.
