There seems to be a lot of BS, backtracking, and strange statements....

There seems to be a myth on this forum, that anyone with a misfire, has a faulty coil pack? or faulty spark plugs!

GET OVER THIS!!!!! There are far many issues that affect your cars! DO NOT REPLACE COIL PACKS per say...

Not sure what you mean by this! I came on here asking for help and advice. Not a arguement.

Anyway if it does turn out to be the ecu should i have any comeback from the garage that did the work or the place that remapped the ecu? It cost over£600 about 14 mnts ago if its the same fault or was not done right I feel they should sort it out

Just gathering "evidence", whoever remapped/worked on the vehicle seemed to think it was the coil pack that caused a problem, they changed it incase it caused the ECU to go wrong again/in the first place.

ITS NOT ALWAYS THE MOST EXPENSIVE THING THATS WRONG WITH A CAR!!!!!!! FOR A CAR THATS NOT WORTH MUCH, HAVE A CHEAP SHOT IN THE DARK OR TWO THEN SCRAP IT!!!!!!
  • I would try another ECU,but it has to have the same catchcode numbers. If I'm not mistaken,pre-2004 don't need to coded in

it all depends what warranty that the garage gives. has the ecu ever been check in between fitting & when this problem happened?

if any vehicle comes in with misfire im sure my customer would like me to say straight away 'oh btw one of your most expensive parts needs replacing'

sometimes you have to check things like spark plugs, coil, leads etc. it takes time but this could be 2 separate issues at the same time.

i had engine management light pop on and strange lack of power/juddering on my 02 KA - turned out to be spark plugs and I agree with the above poster who said 'take a shot in the dark with a few cheap bits then scrap it'. You don't want to spend a fortune on an 02 KA.

Although, you could try and get recourse from the ECU people - as far as sale of goods act goes in this case, you would have to prove the fault was not down to misuse etc. Worth trying it on though, they may back down.

Thanks for all replies. Im thinking try a differant garage differant diagnostic thingy. possible try plugs and leads. Im certainly not going to spend a lot of money on it. Just wish i could get t the bottom of it!
  • a coil pack wont cause ECU lock out, but it will be worth while in trying to replace leads and pack anyway just incase theyre are the main symtoms of the engine running rough and brings it back to drivable condition with the ECU throwing a hissy fit.

i'm woundering whether the ECU was loaded with original ford firmware, or remapped with some other type of firmware to increase its output and econemy? if latter it could be the ecu is locked to that mappers equipment to prevent tampering copying of firmware.

A update, Has been to differant garage tried on diagnostics. Still wont read. Has a new coil pack fitted, running much better but still not 100% ie still some lack of power on putting foot down.

    Light still on.

Id rather not grow a pair to be honest as Im female it would be a bit inappropriate.

The ecu may be faulty, but it did need a new coil pack as the old one was clearly damaged and car is running a lot better.

Have spoken to the place that remapped the ecu and it may be going back to them to be checked when I can find someone to take it off without charging me a fortune.

Thanks for your advice, but if your are going to post silly and inappropriate remarks dont bother:(
