Service intervals on a 3008 are 24 months so getting close!

He's had the 3008 over 24 months with no service, he's handing it back in a couple of months.

That seems an awful long time for the car not to be serviced. Has the service light indicator come on the dashboard at all?

I think the computer in some cars detects the milage you've done then if it exceeds or is coming close to a pre-programmed value then the car "tells" you to take it in for a service.

If you bought a new car to keep, I would change the oil every 12 months or 12k miles - disregard what the service book says about long intervals, the manufacturers don't care if it fails after a few years.

This is the problem with buying ex Motabilty cars, everyone raves about them, but this one for instance has only been 'looked at' in 3 years and most are low mileage done in a series of short journeys, a recipe for future disaster.

Ours has a knock from the front strut, Ford say that its not leaking, Motabilty say that its going to be replaced in the next few months - so leave it for the next owner.

(I have to say that its not dangerous nor an MOT failure - just annoying).

I really don't understand 'servicing every 24 months' or 'so many miles'. I've had 3 different cars (different manufacturers) so far and every one I've been sent a service reminder EVERY year. My brother also has a Motability car and he has the same service as me. Seems very odd.

I can remember seeing cars with hand-written signs in the rear window saying 'Running In, please pass' :)

:rotfl:Showing our age now! I can remember AA patrolmen on motorbikes, and when they spotted my Dad's badge, on the front of our beat up ol' banger, they would give a crisp salute. I thought this was great!!

I'm not twisting it at all.

He said "absolute tosh" and I was just wondering what he/she was classifying as "absolute tosh".

Was it where I said "It probaly has changed most likely to keep costs down" or was it where I said "You can of course take it in at any time if you have any concerns or something goes wrong." or was it where I said "You have to get it MOTd at the end of the three years as it's then due to change hands."

Or was he/she classifying all 3 as "absolute tosh"!
I said quite clearly that Motability cars are serviced annually or at a set mileage (whichever is the sooner) and there has been no change in that policy for cost-saving or any other means. Hope that makes it clear for you.

That is not entirely the full answer.

Modern cars have three ways of calculating when they are in need of a service.

    1. By a set annual mileage - some can go to 20,000 miles in a year before a service is due.
    2. By a set number of months - normally every 12 months
    3. The car's computer will calculate when a service is due - sometimes every 6000 miles.

The service must take place when the earliest of the three indicates it.

As in the case of a modern vauhall - 20,000 miles or 12 months or when the service indicator displays it.

So in your opinion my suggestion that cars are not serviced annually as a cost saving measure is "absolute tosh", however everything else I suggested was not "absolute tosh". :D

One out of three on the "Pravda absolute tosh scale" isn't that bad then!! Huzza. :D

I have no idea what you are talking about. I said that Motability cars are serviced annually OR by a set mileage (or as Andy said, a service indicator), whichever is the sooner. No idea why you fail to understand what I originally said since another poster appeared to understand it clearly.

Just to remind you as to what I was replying to :-

As I stated above, it has NOT changed.
