I work in the IT Department of a large haulage company. Red is on display a lot, but generally it's down to choice.
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

I'm a client visiting insurance broker, tend to wear black or grey trousers (£6 Matalan), ankle boots and a jumper - all machine washable. I don't like the restrictive feeling that fitted jackets give, so wear a knitted shawl/cloak thingummy over the top (must look like a witch :D).

I specialise in Motor Trade, and I love it when they fuss around looking for a chair cover for me, I just wink and say "cheap and washable" and sit down on a grubby seat. I follow it up with "I've been to enough garages to know not to wear my white Gucci designer suit" coupled with a waggly eyebrowed grin. The people I deal with do not like pin striped salesfolk, and the above comments reinforce that I have enough years experience and knowledge to dress for my surroundings.

In particularly chilly workshops, I have been known to get my stripey fingerless gloves out.

PS. Have some original 1976 Converses somewhere, and a fine selection of similar later lookilikies.

You can get away with anything at my work! It's a real mix of outdoorsy farm workers, jeans/converse-clad students/lab assistants and smart office workers. I'm office based and vary my outfit depending on what I'm doing. If I'm attending meetings, it's usually a shift dress, if I'm wandering around setting up events etc, it's jeans and Converse or if the event involves me meeting and greeting, it's a shortish skirt with thick black tights and knee length boots. If you see someone wearing a suit you know the the TV people are coming to film them![/QUO

Interested in where you work, sounds a lot like my office in Oban :j

ETA - can't put it here - I might be identified!! I'll pm you.

This is a really interesting thread.

Could I ask for views on heels? If you google 'office wear' almost every image is of a woman in high heels, yet my friends and family report no-one in their offices wear heels, and that flat black smart boots seems to be the main shoe of choice. I'm about to start working occasionally in an office and am having to chose appropriate shoes and don't know what to go for.

I wear medium (usually thin) heels, never flat.
    Occasionally high.

I work in higher education. I wear a pretty top (which I can wear for other occasions) and a black skirt with tights. Never heels as I have really sensitive feet so either flat black smart shoes or boots.

Smart trousers (usually black), a top or jumper (don't do shirts), sometimes a jacket, flat shoes. Except dressdown Fridays when jeans and trainers are banned so of course we all wear jeans and trainers.

  • Boots or flat pumps, black tights and a dress or skirt and top with a cardigan. I do have a suit and smarter clothes but they are reserved for important meetings.

I wear black, flat pump type shoes in the office. They are quite a popular type to wear. Some ladies I work with do wear medium heels, I don't as it hurts my bunion!
