as others have say luck of the draw, though got to say do well for my tinned toms they often appear but I will only buy when under the price of the value range for store.

Tinned goods are best as keep

  • It is definitely luck! Most of time there's rubbish, or things that I wouldn't buy anyway, but SOMETIMES you go in and it's fab. Those rare occasions are what keeps me checking!I popped into Mr A on the way home from work yesterday and managed to get 4x pies and a pack of root mash for under £2. I also got 2x cheesecakes for the kids pudding so we were all happy (and full), especially DH as he doesn't get pie that often!

I don't think I have failed to get something at either Waitrose or Tesco's over the past few weeks. Today at Tesco I managed to get Swede for 19p, 4 packs of Ripen at Home Advacado's for 18p per pack, a pack of different coloured tomatoes for 30p, a pack of organic peppers for 30p and 2 cos lettuces for 24p - all between 7 and 7:30 pm. Store was quiet due to the inclement weather.

Went to my local T and A's this evening in Edinburgh at 11pm and there was absolutely nothing left, won't be making that mistake again. Also mucked up counting my minimum items for Tesco price match!!
  • 11pm is too late, markdowns in our T's happen at about 7pm weekdays and 4pm on weekends, sometimes the store is so busy on a weekend they don't bother to mark down.

I go to my local Mr T's twice a week at about 8pm, to kill an hour while DD is at swimming. Good time for reductions but it's variable....one in eight times I can come out with the trolley half full of meat, veg and bakery stuff for pennies, most days I'll get a couple of bits, now and again nothing.

You do get to know the regulars and we're usually quite cooperative with one another but now and again you get the sharks in. There were two women that came regularly over a couple of months just after Christmas and if they were there, you might as well go home. They were rough as they come, full of loud racist comments against some of the regular folk and definately of the trolley as weapon persuasion. And they would try to bully and intimidate the younger staff if they were doing the reductions. I gave up even going near the reduced shelves when they were around, they were so aggressive and foul mouthed. Then suddenly, they stopped coming. Maybe someone complained and they got banned?

It's a great way to stretch the budget though. I just about cry when I have to pay full price for meat these days.

My local Tescos has nothing, I've been at 7.30 and again just before closing, I've noticed they remove all the bread from the deli from the shelves but they don't reduce it and put it out. Never any meat reduced.

Morrisons are better, get loads of bread, French sticks etc for pence that I throw in the freezer, bought some muller lights for 9p each last week, blocks of feta cheese for 45p but never seem to see any meat reduced?

Waitrose meat is very good - particularly the lamb. What's more towards the end of the day, because they are all partners you can negotiate with them on the meat, fish and deli counters.

My worst experience in there was when i popped back in to get some final reductions, having done most of my yellow label shopping. Unknown to me there were offers on the items that I bought - like you describe. The lad on the checkout looked sheepishly at me and said that they owed me money and had to call the manageress over. I was so embarrassed as I usually try to "hide" those sort of reductions in the rest of the shopping. I think I got 71p back for 6 or 7 items. :o
