All the windows open, side door open all day (I work from home). At night, a fan on in the bedroom. These last few nights it hasn't helped at all.

My mother swears by her hot water bottle. She's travelled the world with it. If she's cold, she fills it with hot water. If she's hot, she fills it with cold water.

Splash all over with coldcloth, then sit by the fan.

We got an aircon unit 5 yrs ago for the last heatwave, but its very noisy for sleeping.

Keep curtains/blinds shut during the day.

Go to bed with a hot water bottle filled with cold water.

I lightly spray the pillows and bottom sheet with rose water or something similar just before I go to bed.

Magicool is pretty good stuff. Its like having a fridge in a can. I spray it towards the ceiling in my son's room before he goes to sleep. It takes the heat out of the air and quickly cools down the room, you don't need much. It's a little pricey (around £4.50-£5.00 per 150ml can), but one can last me for 2/3 years. Places like Boots & Superdrug stock it and have started to do their own versions.

Keep all windows, doors and curtains closed during the day, if the outside temp is more than inside you are actually warming your house up more by keeping them open.
Then as soon as outside is cooler than inside open everything up.
if you follow that, and have good insulation in the house you will keep it as cool as possible (without air conditioning), if you don't then the good insulation will make it hotter.

opening the loft hatch is potentially a bad idea, it can get incredibly hot, and if you have a draft going the wrong way you could make it hotter.

A few damp towels draped over a clothes horse. Then get a fan to blow onto them. As the water evaporates it cools the air down. A cheap 'n' cheerful DIY aircon unit :)

Freeze 2 large bottles of water (I use empty pop bottles) and stand them in front of the fan, on a tray to catch any drips. Pop them back in the freezer in the morning ready to use again. It works.

It cools the air down but it also increases the humidity.
