I dampen one of those stitched (double layer) microfleece cleaning cloths before bedtime and leave it on the glass top on my bedside cabinet. If I wake up with the heat I can place it on my forehead or face and find it refreshingly cool. Place it back on the cabinet and it soon cools ready for reusing :) I also find that it blocks out the light if early morning sun is a problem, although I hate to complain about that!

I go into shops to enjoy the free aircon. Had a lovely frosty browse in some fancy place by Sloane Sq, being glared at by shop staff as I looked at £600 skirts in my 5 year old New Look shoes. Cooled me down a bit before I got on the Tube Inferno.

Haha! Try Harrods. I went browsing with my wife and the staff couldn't have been nicer, though we were both quite well dressed so maybe they thought we could afford the ££££££££ pricetags!

    Here's my tips:

Shut the heat out - the continental method. Air the rooms in the morning when it's cool, then close them before it starts getting hot, and close the curtains. Keep a non-sunny window open for ventilation.

Home made shutters. Don't laugh, this works. To keep a room cool, use old cardboard and gaffer tape to make a 'shutter' which will fit exactly in the windowframe. Affix it with drawing pins or gaffer tape. Cover the side that faces outward with tinfoil. In winter you can use them the other way round to reflect heat back into the room.

On the tube: 'cold water bottle'. Don't laugh this works as well! Get two of those little blue cold-box plastic things and put them in a small cotton bag and hang them round your neck or put them in your trousers pockets. Keep them in the fridge at work for the way home.

Always stand on the 'windward' side of the carriage right by the end window. This will give a blast of slightly cooler air which is much better than being stuck in the middle of the carriage.

I keep a pack of value babywipes in the fridge, and wipe myself over with them every so often. Its quite refreshing.

If you don't have access to a fridge (e.g. at work or on holiday), keep babywipes chilled in a food flask - bliss:)

Hi everyone, my first post so apologies if anyone has already added a similar thread.

How do you keep your bedrooms cool in Summer. We're in a two storey house, have cavity wall insulation and the attic has been insulated...

However it's impossible to keep the bedrooms below 25-26oc at the moment... Thoughts please.

We do have fans on in the evening, keep curtains shut during the day, but as soon as the sun starts to dip the windows are wide open (house is North/South facing)

The only way to make the rooms cooler is through active cooling.

For cost sake, it's easier to cool the person. So we just point fans at our bodies while we sleep.

We have ceiling fans in all our bedrooms, we leave the windows open slightly, but still locked, which helps. Got the ceiling fan idea from holidaying in Florida, never thought we'd need it in the UK but suppose global warming hasn't helped.

Just like air bricks, leave bedroom windows at back and front of the house open - you get a good cooling draw of air through the house.

Take the loft hatch off so the warm air upstairs has somewhere to go.

I leave the loft hatch ajar all the time so the hot air can keep going up, and keep the curtains closed during the day so the sun doesn't shine in. As soon as I get home I open the bedroom windows (they're on the latch the rest of the time), and then when we go to bed we have a floor standing fan next to the bed if it's really warm.
