Alison - you will not be charged for calling an 0845 number via 18866, so long as you don't call the 0845 number in the first instance. You will be charged for the 01 or 02 UK national number you originally dialled only.
If Whirlpool connect you from their switchboard to an 0845 number, then they will bear the cost for the duration of the call to the 0845 number and you will continue to pay for the duration of the call at the same rate that you started. In this situation there is two lots of charging going on.0 -

I have been waiting two weeks for an item from Comet group Plc. Each time it is empty promises. I have telephoned at least three times on the 08705 number the last being lengthy at 18 minutes costing £1.26. This is typical of most companies operating these numbers. Their intention is to either disuade you from contacting them or making you pay. Complaints or genuine enq's about delayed goods should not be subject to this type of service. I challenge Loopytush about the comments on the companies costs and the comparison to the "small profits". Then pray tell, how can they afford to pay their top boss millions and the others hundreds of thousands per year. This surely puts things in perspective.0

I suggest we start a national boycot of companies/traders/ Offices issuing these numbers. We could for instance allocate a day of the week for a named list such that, on that day, we do not enter the store or give them any business. So effectively we could starve them of profit thus forcing them to take notice of their life blood, THE CUSTOMER. When all said and done it won't hurt us for one day or so but it would give these arrogant suits a mighty smack in the tush. ;D0

Did you know that whilst they are ripping you off at 7p per minute, these corporate scoundrels are plundering the profits by having FREE Private Medical and Dental treatment for themselves AND their families. Not to mention the profit perks, Expensive company cars, chauffuers, First class Rail and air travel, plus Incentive schemes for managers and discounted puchase. So, it is not only customers who suffer, it can be a double whammy if you are a shareholder. :-/0

Doesn't the geographical number always exist on these 0870 numbers? As I understand it the 0870 number is overlaid onto an existing (original?) geographical number. It is not an area code number like 0161, 020 etc. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, I called Nationwide today re my mortgage on an 08457 number I had been given by my local branch, but when I looked at the number on the website, the last 6 digits were exactly the same, except prefixed with an 0800 number. Needless to say, I hung up and rung the freephone number! And got the answer I was looking for. It pays to search!0 -
  This saynoto0870 campaign has been running for some time and seems to be getting nowhere. Even if you log on to the website it is now more or less a commercial site, although they do have lists of alternative numbers I must agree. I seem to be unlucky as every time I put in a number or a company I just get blanked! So with all the time wasted searching etc. I give up and dial the b***** 0845/0870 number although it goes against the grain. Why do we put up with it in this country, in the USA every company contact is Freefone. The problem is the younger generation have had everything they want right from the word go so 4p or 7p a minute is peanuts to them. Or they just use their mobiles. One ploy I used to use was to phone the 0800 sales numbers listed in Yellow Pages for Sales Enquiries and ask to be put throught to Customer Services, but loads of them have cottoned on and stopped doing it. When you complain it is usually to some halfwit in a call-centre somewhere who couldn't care less.
Ask for a supervisor or manager and they are busy but will ring you back and they never do! Its about time the Consumers Association got their act together, if you are a member write to them and suggest they start a campaign as well. Any other suggestions ??
PS. Tried the Selfridges geographical number given by Sergeant 121 and 18866 say it is an incorrect number !!"0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0
