Should I sell my wedding dress to pay debt?

I would say sell, but only if you can cope with upset. A friend of mine owned anearly new shop in a 'good' area, but 9 out of 10 wedding dresses never sold, even for only 10% of purchase price. So once you decide to sell you must forget sentiment and be thankful for what you get back.0

I sold mine about 2 years after our wedding. Son is never going to wear it (I hope), he's not been christened as we too are atheists and dresses go out of fashion so quickly.
I sold the dress, veil, headdress and shoes to a local amdram group doing a play about a wedding dress and the stories of 3 different women that wore it.
I still have the photo's, memories and husband to remind me of the day itself.Illegitimi non carborundum.0 -
My friend had hers made into a christening gown, which passed down to her grandchildren eventually, so roughly 15 seperate uses after her wedding day... I think she well and truly got her moneys worth out of it...It is now a heirloom, on hold for the Great grandkids.0

I still have mine after nearly 14 years in the vain hope that one day I will be able to say I can still fit into it. On our 6th anniversary I had an argument with my DH and said there was no way I would be able to get into it anymore. He was adamant I would. So I went and got it and lo and behold not only could I get into it but I could swivel it right round my waist. I had actually lost weight since the wedding. The dress was a size 12 so that was probably the only time I have ever been closer to a size 10. The following year DS came along, followed by hypothyroidism, followed by DD so now it probably wont even come up over my thighs but I live in hope.:rotfl:The person who moves a mountain begins by carrying small stones.

If you think that you can get a decent price for it I'd say sell it, you will only get less sentimental about it over time, however, 2nd hand wedding dresses go for pitiful amounts of money so for that reason I'd say keep it.
So I'm totally on the fence!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

I would say keep it but I am unsure. I was wondering a while ago if I should sell the solid gold watch that my mother bought me for 21st my birthday. Its badly damaged but I could get quite a bit for the gold. However, I was thinking about when I was 21, my mother had nothing. She must have saved up her very meagre income to buy me that for a long time. I didnt really appreciate it at the time but now I do. Maybe you will feel the same about your dress in years to come or maybe its not the same. I dont know but I feel like I shouldnt sell that watch and feel very sad about it because I even considered it. Maybe one of your daughters would like it one day.
Its my birthday today, my mother is long gone and no one bothers to get me a card except those at work so I am just having a grouch. SorryThe forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I think you've done the right thing. You are never going to wear it again
!
Having said that, I got my dress (1st wedding lol) out of the loft yesterday with the intention of ebaying it. It's been in a box sonce 1995 and I tried it on out of curiosity and it still fits (yay!!!) :j
It's a gorgeous dress but I didn't feel in the least sentimental about selling it - but then the wedding was a lot longer ago than yours!! I've kept the photos for my DSs to look at and I still have the video so I can always see how gorgeous the dress was if I want to.
Hope you get some good bids!

Personally, I would keep it. I've never been married, so can't speak from personal experience but my Mum kept hers and when I was little Iused to love the 'magic' of being allowed to get it out and dress up in it.
I don't think they go for very much - maybe keep it and see if there is anything else lying around the place with less sentimental value that you could sell?"Stay Wonky":D

We got married 5th August last year and it's been in a dress bag gathering dust ever since. I washed it today (In the washing machine ) and it came out better but still with stains around the bottom but as I'm tall (5'9) I though anyone shorter than me could easily have it altered and therefore the stains removed....
The dress was a shop sample and £345 reduced from £545 but we didn't actually pay a penny for it as my brother bought it for me as a wedding present.
My question is.... sentiment? Or money towards debt?
OK call me a rubbish MSE but I would keep my dress and have, this weekend I toyed with selling the bridesmaid dresses my daughters wore and looked on ebay and they go for nearly nothing so I thought no I will keep them. Dug into the cupboard and found some more things we never use.
My wedding day was the happiest of my life and one day I will be debt free - and I would love to still have my dress.0 -
