Windows naturally degrades and unless you are very technically minded trying to resurrect a decaying system would be more trouble than it is worth. I run a system of 3 x Windows PC’s, 1 x Ubuntu and 1 x MAC and the reason I run 3 Windows systems is because Windows is a bag of nails. (Don’t ask why it is a day job thing)
If you are running XP and you have backed up the stuff you want to keep then reinstallation is very simple if you have the original discs or a recovery partition has been set aside on your hard drive.
This will guide you:

All the drivers for your machine can be found here:
packardbell.co.uk/pb/en/GB/content/download
A few clicks and an hour or so the machine is back to its new state.
Any trouble PM me and I will help you.If you can't explain it SIMPLY, you don't understand it well enough. Albert Einstein

no problem i googled it and found it but taking forever to complete been running for 40 mins now, it's got as far as 25% and the yellow packman are still moving back and forth but not moving past 25%, does it normally take this long or should i stop it and restart it ?0
-
let it complete
you may wish to run chkdsk on the c: drive if everything is taking so long
chkdsk c: /R
which will run after a reboot
and post a hijackthis log!!

one last question, i promise.. i've run the windirstat, took 5 hours to complete, it show most of my space is taken up by (navy Blue) JScript Script File 24.1GB, the next biggest is (red) Application Extention 13.7GB, Is it safe to delete these and is there an easy way of doing it from the windirstat report ? Any help would be great x0

Not sure what version of Windows you're using. Vista can use a large amount of disk space for system restore files. Also, over the years the winsxs folder can become very large as it stores multiple versions of files that are replaced during updates.
You can release the memory used by system restore by turning it off and back on again and then restrict it to a suitable size via a couple of command line entries. Look here. I once found that system restore on my pc was taking over 100GB, which I subsequently reduced to 10GB.
There are also tools that let you reduce the size of the winsxs folder, though they do have some drawbacks. Read about it here. Proceed with care.0 -
