Aldi more expensive and quality declining?

Slightly OT but I had an email from mysupermarket today asking to do a survey or somesuch about Aldi. The premise seemed to be that when Aldi adverise how much cheaper they are they don't compare like with like. So they compare Aldi own brand with premium/branded in one of the big four.
I CBA to do their survey. I was just irritated by the fact that they think we're so stupid that we don't know that!
So many price rises, including Aldi's, seem to be based on the fact that they think consumers are idiots!!!
Sadly they also know we have to eat.0 -

Haha! thats funny, the whole point of the adverts is 'like brands, only cheaper' not 'Like crappy own brands, no cheaper'
We get most of our stuff from Lidl and some from Aldi, primarily not because of price but that the quality is better. The low price is a bonus.
find me any store from Coop to Waitrose that has a better egg sandwich filling or cheese coleslaw or mature cheddar or plump fresh chicken breast than Lidl... can't be done!0 -
yes the price of my shop at Aldi has gone up - but, compared to the other supermarkets - its still a bargain. while doing our 'top up shop' we do compare the prices to Aldis. OH is often shocked!
I am disappointed that so many 'Brands' are now being introduced to our local store. If I wanted Brands I would shop elsewhere as they are not much cheaper anyway!
I loved trying out Aldi's foreign brands - in many cases they were far superior. If Aldi are just going to become a clone of Adsa or Tresco - why should I bother shopping there?
and the fruit and veg from my local store is brilliant (usually). The pineapples have been either 69p or 89p for a couple of years and they are really delicious - as long as you know how to pick a ripe pineapple!0 -
Aldi sell HP Sauce for £1.49, yet I buy elsewhere as several other places charge 99p for same size bottle.
Don't like Aldi's brown sauce, even since they changed the recipe last year.0 -
There's really no point in buying "brands" at Aldi/Lidl. Not unless they are on special offer.0

That's true.
The only item I have to buy brand is the brown sauce, as I only like HP or Daddies.0 -
The other thing is that some of the branded items in Lidl, especially, often swing from full price to special offer quite frequently. Sometimes, it happens so often, you know what the price will be before it happens e.g. Utterly Butterly - 89p0

It does. Also it seems to me that Lidl only stock brands when they can't get supplies of their own brand and need to fill a gap in their range. Like ketchup, their own one was our kids favourite and had a healthier massive tomato content rather than sugar and other padding stuff like Heinz but its not been in for ages so they have been stocking a brand we won't buy.0 -

I have to agree with you on all points really. Aldi is my main shop of choice, with the odd bit bought from Lidl and things that I can't get from them I get from the supermarkets. At Aldi there are some things that have gone up, but likewise I do notice products that have gone down in price too, and not in the gimmicky way that supermarkets reduce the prices by increasing them first.
Our Aldi has got really busy over the last 6-12 months. Before it would only really be Sunday and Thursday when they have their specials that they would be really busy, but now it doesn't really matter when you go there are always queues, and they've put in an extra till.
I don't really like that they've started stocking brands - it's taking shelf space away from products that I would much prefer to buy, and most of the branded goods that they have are full price so I certainly wouldn't buy them from there. I talk to the staff quite a bit, and it seems that the branded goods appearing on the shelves is at the request of the new influx of shoppers. I think that the new Aldi shoppers have finally cottoned on to the fact that you can save a few bob by shopping there, but they don't really understand the Aldi & Lidl way of shopping and you often hear them complaining about not being able to pack at the till, or they insist on doing it there and hold everyone up. If they want the brands and to be able to take their time at the checkout they should go back to shopping elsewhere! But I suppose you can't blame Aldi for catering to their wants as their profits must be souring with all these new customers.
Sorry to have gone so off topic lol :-)0 -
