Aldi more expensive and quality declining?

Strangely enough, I was thinking just that myself. I'm sure the 70% chocolate I buy used to be 99p and last week it was £1.09. If I'm right that's about a 10% increase so way over inflation. I think orange juice had gone up too.
I buy a specific range of items in Aldi (f&v is ok with us generally) and then top up in Sainsbury. I think I'll do a Sainsbury shopping list on mysupermarket this week and compare Aldi prices.
The comparisons don't work.
They'll take a small Basics/value pasta for 50p and compare it with a giant sack of posh pasta.
If I start my shopping on any of the big supermarkets online, there is never a direct comparison made.
If I start with Tesco, it'll be cheaper there, asda, etc. once you do the my supermarket swap, you then have to go through and redo it to get accurate comparison products.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Aldi's F&V is cold stored as well. Not quite frozen but stored at near zero degrees long term to extend the season or to transport it long distances.
How do Aldi mango's get here from Peru? They travel in refrigerated containers on ships.
How do other supermarket's get here? The same.
And the ones from the ethnic supermarkets taste far, far nicer for far less money, anyway. Same with tomatoes and cucumbers. And peppers. And garlic. And lemons. And pasta. And frozen veg like artichoke hearts. And olive oil..........I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I can't say that I've noticed any price increase on my Aldi shopping, but I don't really buy a lot in the one go, but little and often. Personally I find their fruit is cheaper than Asda and Sainsbury's, and certainly lasts longer than Asda fruit. I saw some grapes in Sainsbury's the other day, half price @ £2.50! When they are still only £1.79 in Aldi.
I also take in to consideration the stress factor, and that I can walk in to an Aldi, know exactly where everything is, easily pick up what need, pay for the items and leave in one piece. Unless I go to Asda during the early hours of the morning (when there's no checkouts open and pallets of stock down every isle), I'm always fighting through crowds of people because so many people insist on taking their whole family with them. It's not worth the stress, if there's no Aldi I'll pay more and go to a Sainsbury's or somewhere similar where it's a more civilised shopping experience.0 -
Has anyone noticed how much quieter it is in L & A than in the big supermarkets?0

I didn't explain that terribly well:o. What I intend to do is look at Sainsbury's (Basics or own brand) to get the the cost per kg/ml Then I'll have a list of prices to compare with Aldi. When I'm shopping, I generally go to Aldi first and then on to Sainsbury's for things Aldi doesn't sell/I don't like. This way I won't buy an item in Aldi if I think the price has gone up so much I'm better off buying in Sainsbury's. If the price is very close I'd probably choose the Aldi as it's likely to be better quality although, as Basics go, Sainsbury's is pretty good.0 -
Annoyed at the price rise, but even more annoyed that since they've been changing the suppliers, many of the items have changed, the recipe have change with the supplier change and many of the items are now nasty and inedible, noticed them getting a lot of complaints about it.
Aldi items used to be comparable to brands, now a lot of them are worse than other supermarket basic range, not even close to the other supermarkets next range up.
Aldi have made a big mistake here reducing the quality of the items, that was the reason I used to shop at Aldi, quality at a good price. Now it's poor quality at no better price.0 -
Maybe it's just our Aldi in Aberdeen but the fruit and veg is fantastic!
Recently I've had sweet potatoes which have lasted 2 months (kept in a dark cupboard), oranges which have lasted 10 weeks (in the fridge), carrot last up to a month if kept in the fridge. Butternut squash and apples last weeks if unused too. Only issue I've had was with onions and soft fruits going soft/getting mouldy quickly but then all onions have been iffy this winter due to a wet Summer.
Also, their cheese lasts for months unopened in the fridge.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. Asda is actually more expensive and poorer quality these days than Sainsbury's for a lot of things, especially meat! Asda is cheap for "junk food" (ready meals, crisps, sweets etc.) but for fresh food I don't find it competitive at all any more.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. Bread, chicken, cooked meats, and many other items, loads have gone up here and there.
Small chicken for example gone from £2.49 to £2.99. Now get chicken from the butchers with the rest of the fresh meat I already did, as I can get two chickens for £5 from the butchers.0
