No piece of software will replicate the quality of the sound given by some of the headphones on the market.

It is down to the build of the headphones.

I'm still struggling with this...a standard 3.5mm jack socket is a one-way affair...there's no mechanism for it to feed back any info into the device, from a chip or anything else...Are they able to do this because it's a hands-free socket or what? I'm just interested in how the electronics of it works, because it's all news to me...:)

(and, of course, the whole concept is WHACK anyways )

Can you explain more about why you say this - are you suggesting this is not possible? The profile may not just be static eq, it could be a whole range of processing features such as dynamic range compression to make it 'loud'.
