Cancelling Sky -only by phone??

Options
Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice about my contract with Sky.

I wrote to them with all my account details asking them to cancel my TV, Phone and Broadband services and to take treat the letter as my official notice (ie the start of the 30 days notice I am contractually required to give them.) Eight days later they wrote back to me saying I needed to call an 0844 number to 'complete the cancellation'.

When I called the number I was informed that the start of my 30 day cancellation would be today rather than the date of my letter as they don't accept notification of cancellation by any method other than phone. I asked them to point out where in any of my Terms and Conditions that they have informed me of this and they couldn't. I've checked them thoroughly and there is no mention of needing to contact them by telephone to cancel.

So it appears I am left paying for an extra 11 days of service because Sky have a set of 'rules' they keep secret from their
customers?

Does anyone know if this is legally correct?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks

    Sounds like nonsense to me.

I'd call back and see what someone else says. Failing that, I'd be emailing the Jeremy Darroch address to see what they have to say.

It's so that they can unleash retentions on you when you call to cancel-what they cunningly call 'disconnections'.

Provided that you used Recorded Delivery and printed out a copy of the delivery confirmation from the Royal mail web site, your cancellation starts from that date. That's how I did it.

I emailed to ask how to cancel, they replied saying if I replied to that email they would cancel it, when I did they said I'd have to call that 0844 number.

I can't be arsed with their sales patter, and I don't have time to hang on the line for ages, and I hate those automated answer machines, press 1 if you want to subscribe, press 2 if you are an idiot etc etc and they said I could cancel by replying to an email...

you can cancel online. There is a downgrade option which i have used twice.

I then got a phone call from sky and the offer of another 50 per cent reduction.

i also got rid of espn a few weeks ago online. Again without any problems or the need to phone them.

Why phone them, when they will phone you with some goodies.
