BT Direct Debit, How To Beat It
Full Thread Here:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=446084I have just looked at my bill and noticed I am charged £1.50 for not paying by Direct Debit or Monthly Payment. My bill is paid by internet transfer from my bank account but they say this incurrs charges is this correct
Sign up to direct debit then keep paying using online banking, and you save money too.0 -

Two extra words tell it all - 'sign up' to Direct debit (i.e. not necessarily use).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
You sign up to direct debit but keep paying as you always have done (online banking) and so long as you pay before they call for the direct debit (normally they send you an email 2 weeks before) you will save money.
I have been doing it every month since they introduced the charge and removed the discount, yes I used to be happy for others to get a discount but not happy for me to get an increased charge for paying on time.
I know all the arguments about that it was only a £1 increase and we always paid it before, but thanks to BT I now pay less than I did before but still pay in the same way so I am well happy, also I followed Heinz advice in his HERE signature and took most of my calls away from BT.
So far BT have lost £100 from me and all because they wanted to charge me for paying my bill the way I wanted and that I still do.0 -

You miss my point, I have not said that they are unjustified - BT said this to ME0 -

I've just looked at my MIL's bill which I'm paying for her at the Post Office tomorrow and it doesn't say anything about a £1.50 charge. Where abouts on the bill should it be?0 -
Does this definitely work?
I had an issue two consecutive payments where I did not receive a correct bill with 10 working days notice of them wanting access to my bank account.
The first time, they explained a huge fault, gave me a free month and apologised, done and dusted.
The second time they produced an incorrect bill, I queried it initially asking them to correct the bill and delay the DD until I had been in possession of the amended and correct bill for the 10 working days required by the direct debit agreement. They refused point blank to do so, so I canceled the DD in place.
That was 13th December, and since then not only has the incorrect second bill STILL not been amended, but it has been marked as paid for some reason, and my latest bill (16th Jan), shows that the outstanding amount from my previous bill has indeed not been carried over, thus making this latest bill, also inaccurate.
Seeing as they can't seem to produce an accurate bill or abide by the Direct Debit agreement I have canceled the direct debit and set up a standing order to them for the line rental (my calls are through another provider), but I object to the 4.50 charge which they say is down to the fact that it costs them more to receive payment through any method other than DD, when in fact SO and DD cost exactly the same according to schedules of charges posted on the banks website.0 -
The Daily Mail seem to think things could heat up.
The full article in the Paper yesterday (16th Jan) suggested that BT " will not give up £90 million" without a fight.

This part of the article holds the key to the argument in my view :-
"It (BT) cannot prove how costs are incurred, or explain why the cost it incurred for administering payments rose so dramatically last May""It's nice to be important but more important to be nice"

Are Ofcon runnng scared?I've just noticed Ofcom's long awaited statement on this charge has apparently been put back.
On 04-01-2008 their site said:
Ofcom expects to publish a consultation document with our findings in January 2008. We will be seeking views from all interested parties before publishing our final conclusions.
On 16 01 2008 it says:
We expect to publish a consultation shortly. Due to the high level of analysis involved, we are unable to give a definite date of when this will be but details will be published on our website. We will be seeking views from all interested parties before publishing our final conclusions.0
