BT Direct Debit, How To Beat It

Hi all, Ive been on BT broadband for approx 12 months now and when joining I had to set up a Direct Debit agreement. Guess what? No money has come out of my bank account yet. Why? Simple. I have a BT payment card and use it to make payments into the BT account or make online payments, and as long as your BT account is in credit by the date the Direct Debit should come out of your bank account, then BT cant take money from your account.
I have been doing this for 12 months now and BT have never taken a payment from my Bank Account. Give it a try

you'll still be charged the payment processing fee of £1.50 per month thoughThe views expressed on this website, be they in text, pictures or sound, are my own personal views. Not those of my employer, its staff or colleagues.0

In this scenario he won't be charged any payment processing fee. He has the DD set up but because he pays his bill with his payment card in advance, so when it arrives he doesnt owe anything, nothing comes out of his bank account.Back on slimming world after my second baby!!Lost 2 st 12 lbs after my first!Weight loss to date - 1 st0 -
Wonder if that would work with online banking?
I may test it this month.0 -

yes he would be charged. for customers to avoid the fee, the payment has to come directly from the bank account via dd.
The point of the fee is when ever customers pay using the payment card or another method other than dd, BT incurrs additional charges. This is why the fee is raised.
As the OP pays by payment card, additional charges are incurred.
BT's terms says the bill has to be paid by dd, meaning them collecting it automatically. Not, must set up a dd to avoid the charge. The views expressed on this website, be they in text, pictures or sound, are my own personal views. Not those of my employer, its staff or colleagues.0 -
Just because it say's that does not mean the system is not flawed and it works.
As the OP has been doing it for 12 months I guess it works for him.
I am going to test it myself but using online banking, how can they take the DD if you have no bill to pay? i.e. your in credit.
I think they have set it up so if you have registered DD you dont get charged but the system cant see if you had paid by another method.BT incurrs additional charges. This is why the fee is raised.
But not by the amount it costs them, see system is wrong already.0 -
I'm trying to work out where the advantage is in this.
You have a DD set up, yet you voluntarily pay BT earlier than the DD date (presumably at least a week early, as that's often how far ahead some firms set uo their DDs), so losing interest on your money.
And, of course, depending on whether it's right that the charge isn't levied or whether it's just a glitch, you put yourself at risk of paying the charge anyway.
What have I missed? Where do you gain?0 -
You pay in the format you want to and not as BT want you to.
I will post if it works for me next month using online banking.
And if it does cost them more money, even more reason to do it so long as we dont get charged.
I am willing to take a £1.50 gamble to see what happens.0 -

I work at a senior level within BT customer services. You WILL be charged the fee.
I worked on the roll out of this project, I know the procedures.
Bobsie1 says he's been doing this for the past 12 months. The fee was only inroduced on 1st May. Bobsie1 has not yet had his May statment, he told me this in a private message, so he does not know if it works or not!
Bobsie1, can you please post here once you receive your May statment to confirm you were charged?
