The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

Well .. I've stopped sort of by accident. I was knocked off my feet ten days ago by the nastiest bout of flu I've ever had in my life. I went to bed on Monday lunchtime and finally emerged (via fever, hallucinations, a throat so swollen I could barely breathe, pains everywhere) late on the following Saturday afternoon = 5 days later. I had been far too ill even to get out of bed to go to the bathroom without hubby's assistance let alone crawl to the kitchen to get and smoke a ciggie.
I decided that there had to be a pay-off for having been so poorly and since I had already gone almost a week without noticing, that maybe I would just keep on not smoking. Haven't had a coffin nail since so now ten days and counting. I was smoking an unfailing 20 a day and sometimes more if there were lots of visits from friends, or loads of phone calls to deal with - why does chatting make you smoke more?
I have had a couple of occasions where I get a sudden overwhelming craving but as we live way out in the sticks and I chucked all baccy products away, by the time I even think about going out to get any, the craving has gone. I think my biggest fear was waiting for a doctor to tell me that I have inoperable lung cancer - time to get out of the vicious circle of smoking - fear - stress - smoking - fear ....
Like many on this massive thread (waves to hethmar!) I've also got things I'd far rather spend my money on than making the tobacco company shareholders rich on my weakness and the disease of tobacco dependency.
Good luck to me, and to you!0 -
Paddys mum - we won the case last Friday.
Good luck on the no smoking - good on you for chucking the fags away - really, just half a fag left in the house can be a downfall. Its 2 years for me now - cant believe it. Do download that silkquit meter, it was a huge encouragement to me to see the money saved mounting up.0 -
3 days - no cigs! Got the day off tomorrow and taking daughter shopping so might have a little treat!
Good luck everyone, sleep well x0 -
Nite joop, you have that treat kiddo, youve saved what nearly £20?0

Thanks for that Sue but I'm far more likely to think of a young (not too young lol) lady than a beautiful scene!
I'm not taking any sort of meds, only used the gum for a few days. 3wks today it's been...fun times...
Oh dear TDQO, are you telling me you couldn't have used your imagination and had a heck of a great time with a young girl....!It was relaxation we were talking about after all. I don't know - MEN!!! sweet dreams!
Hi all, especially to Debbie, Schmickle, bigsmoke, joop and to paddy's mum! You don't need me to tell you how amazing you're all doing, even you joop! Early days it may be, but you're getting there slowly and day by day it'll become so much easier. You're all going to have such pleasure in finally reaching that terrific goal, there's nothing quite like feeling so much better in yourself healthwise as well as financially, but you're well on your way! :T
Thanks so very much for taking the time again to call by and leave such words of encouragement NAGH, theya er such incentive to those battling away, but determined to strive to the end. Many thanks, Talking of encouragement hethmar, you are doing such a grand job with giving so much support. Thanks so much for all your time, it's precious to you, but even more so to those who need it in a dark moment, hour or day. Thank You!
Best wishes everyone, keep up the pride of being clean and smoke-free!

Morning all,
Day 11 for me today.
It is a lot easier now but I do still get bad cravings. They just don't last as long as before. Getting to sleep at night is still a pain but that should sort its self out soon.
It's great that I have saved £48 as of today and it's been nice to see it come off my credit card daily!
Hope everyone else is doing well.Pay off all your debt by Xmas 2012Aim £8200Total so far £3700Left £45000 -
Hi everyone
Another quick update .. on day 18 now and all's well
Been a really busy week and have totally gone against my own advice, in my sig .. hard work   .. should quieten down a bit soon .. hopefully!!
Great to see everyone doing so well and also the oldies (length of time given up before anyone slaps me) coming back and lending some support!
Keep it up
:T :T :A :T :T:hello:Save a little money each month and at the end of the year you’ll be surprised at how little you have.An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind0 -
Another amazing day for quitters and those helping alike! You're doing an excellent job here hethmar, it's terrific to see such motivation - and you --> TNG, re what you said on Monday (I think) about not having anything to add to what I say - don't you believe it! After that you wrote a wonderful piece to who ever it was you were talking to, great advice!!! :T Hiya Waspy! You're really amazing with your attitude, I'm certainly keeping 'em crossed for you this time! Oh it's so very good when that blessed voice in your head stops nagging away at you. Keep up the power within Waspy!
You too joop! :j Another very positive quitter, take it all day by day, but always keep your eye on that finishing line ...it's such a very beautiful to be at.
A superb achievement Karen and what a joy for your dad to 'see' you having quit them! What inspiration to drive you on, you also hethmar. Why ever is it that even though our loved ones pass away because of such evil illnesses, the first thinkg we reach for is a ciggie?I was exactly the same when my dad-in-law died, though it worked further down the track .... once I'd terrified myself into doing so!
Sexy Legs, your post was delightful to read and yes,you should be so terribly proud at having got through a rotten day, very well done indeed!!! :T Keep that day in mind ...whilst also looking ahead and planning your treat as a non-smoker at the weekend. Do that every week and focus on your plans, NOT your past! Thanks so much for making my day for me.:j
All best wishes to everyone, you've all such wonderful successes to be so proud of.
Sue
Thank you Sue-uu and everyone on here that gave me the support when I needed it most.
Things are still gonig well, have not had a ciggie, I was out this evening so really felt like one but did not give in. I have my carrotts and houmos dip for during the day.
Wishing everyone good luck, we can do it :j0 -
You certainly can do it. No one could believe I did it after 40 years of fags. I wish I could show you a photo - my dentist gave it to me this week when I went for a check up. As I said, I decided that my saved money would go on luxuries Id otherwise never have. One of these was cosmetic dentistry with a private dentist.
I cannot believe what my teeth looked like 2 years back - dentist wanted to give me the pic to remind me. Im glad he did as its even more incentive to keep fag free. There are the teeth, brown stains on each and every one of them, even dark brown stains on one part of the gum which he says had become diseased. Now people actually compliment me on my teethIve had 6 capped - which straightened one that had started twisting to one side and had left a gap between my two front teeth. Now I have these beautiful clean straight teeth - even the ones that havent been capped are sparkling and healthy - all courtesy 18 months of being fag free. The other 6 months of fag freedom paid for a Radley shopper bag and also prosthetic feet for my disabled dog. NOW, arent they all much more worthwhile things to have than a full ashtray??

Excellent Sexy legs! :T You had a really rough day, but look how you've done since! Keep strengthening that resolve daily and little by little you WILL make it, tonight has proved that to you and I'm just so delighted for you. Carrots and houmos dip it is then!
You too mumofcookers, though don't forget to drink water when the cravings come on, OJs too! Those 2 alone will quell the cravings, so too will apples (eating or juggling with them!!!) and pounding up the stairs ---thinking each one has those  EVIL  sticks on them!!! Drinking chocolate and a relaxing bath/shower before bed will help get to sleep, and if you have a read through the relaxation bit I did for TDQO (above) try and remember it - then if you wake up in the night try to go through the best place you know and see all that is beautiful for you and let the mind wander, with a guy of course before anyone mentions it - with his and his young girl. No wonder he's not here today - still dreaming and sleeping like a baby!!! :rotfl:
Oh Waspy, what can I say! You are going great guns! :T So close now to 3 weeks too! Keep up that fantastic work. How wise you were with the oldies remark. :A
Hi hethmar (posting at the same time), the answer to your question HAS to be YES!!!
I'm wishing you all everything you wish for yourselves, clean living, clean smelling and pure clean air!
