The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

Hi Melbury,
yeah... it'll get better. I never had any cramping in my stomach so I don't know about that I'm afraid.
I was thinking about it today and the only conclusion I could come to was that when we used to smoke we loved that "relief" feeling when we had a ciggie. So we obviously make that connection that smoking makes us feel good. But when I realised that all a cigarette relieved was the withdrawal pang from the previous one, I just wanted to break that cycle and see how being "clean" felt!
If I had a fag now it would do nothing at all. Mind you, an hour later, the second one would strangely feel a lot nicer. The one after that would be even better and after that, as long as I got my fix once an hour, I'd be happy. Not quite as happy as I am right now because of all those other chemicals making my head spin and that tar clogging up my lungs again. Soon my lungs would start producing that mucus to try and protect themselves (again) and the cough would start up (again). And suddenly that £50 I've found I STILL have left in my purse would be gone at the end of the week.
I'm sorry, but a stupid little fag is SO not worth it!QUIT SMOKING 4/11/07 :j0 -

Thanks JoeHel for your very positive comments. I know I am just moping about thinking of something that doesn't even exist. If I had a cig now it would taste horrible and make me feel really bad, as I have said before, it is just the idea of it that is appealing. Didn't you find though that things tasted different without the smoke? Mind I have had a bug since Boxing Day and everything has tasted a bit strange so that probably isn't helping.
At work I am absolutely fine not smoking, but at home everyting went with a cig - tea, coffee, booze, making a phone call, receiving a phone call - it really is a case of just breaking the ritual isn't it?
I am not going to give in though, that would just be the EASY way out and I have not suffered for eleven days to throw it all away.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
How are you BrickingIt, have you stopped again today?
xxxxx
Yes, thank you for asking. I stopped at 11.00am and I have not had a ciggie all day, although I nearly caved in around 3pm. Things are not ok, not good but not bad, I would put the feeling slightly better than watching Babel on DVD for two and a half hours  .Hello i'm BrickingIt.

Hi
I'm back AGAIN!!
Not had a fag since last night and while I do fancy one now - quite badly - the fact my OH has stopped drinking completely is giving me more motivation to stay off them! There are none in the house which will help a lot and there won't be any more!! Determined to stick with this now as my health wioll be effected and also I don't want the kids growing up with parents who smoke (they don't see me as I smoke when they've gone to bed but you know what I mean!!).

Glad to hear that you are having another go Bricky - keep at it and you will end up as happy as me:rotfl:
Talking about Babel, I am waiting for that to arrive from Amazon in the next couple of days - is it terrible or something? Is it bad enough to drive me back to smoking?Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Yup, it would taste revolting. For the exact same reason that things taste different now without the smoke... When you smoke, your brain thinks you are being poisoned against your will. (I mean, who would do that on purpose, eh?!) Anyway... your brain does its best to protect you from this poisoning so it dampens down your taste and smell receptors so you don't suffer too much. That's why, just days after we have quit, we can finally smell what non-smokers used to smell on us!!! It's pretty embarrassing now I know what I must have smelled like when I got on the train to work. And I understand why it was so fantastic for non-smokers when all building were made non-smoking.
So if you WERE to have a cigarette (which obviously you WON'T!!!) it would taste like cigarettes really taste - REVOLTING. As soon as your own built-in poison control kicks in the taste will go back to what you remember. Even then the taste isn't great, but we remember it as a lot nicer than it was because it was all wrapped up with us getting our "fix", so to us it was like honey to Pooh Bear! :rotfl:QUIT SMOKING 4/11/07 :j0 -
Yes I have heard of this, just hope it doesn't happen to me though! Drawing on that first cig of the day almost has a laxative type effect - gives an instant urge to go!! I suppose you will just have to try and eat more roughage and drink lots of water. Giving up will be much more beneficial for you that keeping smoking purely based on the fact that it keeps you going. Perhaps try Al-Bran instead - I mean eat it, not smoke it! Good luck.
Thanks Melbury- still given up- 7 days hurrah !! Given up booze for a month too to assist with the smoking and both going well. Haven't even wanted a fag, think its because I had decided enough's enough. Boyfriend is really proud of me as he hated it.
Regarding my question- things still not back to normal but went running last night and about to start 4 times a week again at gym tonight after 3 weeks off- drinking loads of water and have loads of fruit...... can't do any more !!
Thanks again and well done to all xMTC's NO MORE PIES MEMBER NO 202 !!!
