Help!! can I join in??
I'm 44 and NO-ONE my age smokes any more..my hubby of 20 yrs has never smoked.....so WHY can't I quit???? IT IS DEAD INCONVENIENT TOO.
I've tried EVERYTHING over the yrs, NCT, willpower, ALLan Carr (that lasted a week).
We have cut back on EVERYTHING.....but the £35 p wk habit keeps sneaking into the budget list ( i put my finger over it hoping OH doesn't notice it too much) but he is on my case again.
Anyway..my daughter needs braces...there is no NHS treatment for 2 yrs(waiting list) and hers is urgent...except it is £3895  .....The dentist (kindly!) offers an Interest free payment plan but the spare cash IS NOT THERE.
The fag money would cover the 2 yr treatment.
My lungs are shot ...swam 50 lngths today and i can FEEEL the damage.
I can't afford wrinkle treatment (only nivea is allowed into the budget).
But i PANIC at the thought of never having a sneaky, solitary ciggy ever again.
Went to the doc and got Zyban...it is sitting nxt to the bed staring at me...i'm too scared to take it (i've never taken brain altering drugs in my life (apart from the odd smoke 20 yrs ago)
does anyone have experience of zyban??
I don't know where to start.....is it as difficult as i think its going to be???
Can i join this thread?? for support...............0 -
Hiya fc, I have given up using Champix I think that they are similar to Zyban. Zyban came along first and was used to help people lose weight the side effect was people stopping smoking. Next Champix came along just for stopping smoking. You take 2 Champix a day and on about the 8th day you quit. That was it for me and my dh's ex wife, took very little effort, both of us were very heavy long term committed smokers.
Panic attacks, I think you will very soon find that they do not exist when you give up, you panic more as a smoker wondering when you can have your next cig, have you enough to see you through till the morning etc. we have all been there.
Why don't you just try to give up, it can't hurt you to try and you can always smoke if you want to, no need to put yourself under pressure.
I was scared of giving up too what would I do without my crutch?
Good luck, take care,

HI fc,
I know just how you feel - I LOVED smoking and could never imagine a situation when I wouldn't - too frightening to even contemplate   .
Then we had a situation whereby it was food on my kids' plates or I carried on - bit of a no brainer when I look back now, but I lost sleep over it!!
My doc was very clever (suppose that's why she has all those certificates on the wall!), she told me not to think about it as giving up, just that I've stopped buying them. I can have a cigarette any time I want one, I just have to ask someone if I can have one of theirs!! So by the time you have found someone you know well enough to beg one from, either the urge has gone, or they are a mate and just harm you for asking.:D
I also downloaded the silkquit meter so I know know how many I would have smoked etc, so I have now been clean for 2months 3 weeks 2 days and 7 hours!!!:A :A
TBH there now days when I forget I used to smoke - but then there are times when ripping the wallpaper off the walls, rolling it and lighting up would be better than the longing!! But that only lasts a few minutes and another chewing gum usually helps - or deep birth giving type breaths and brushing the teeth!!!
Good luck - you can do it, if I can and I have the willpower of a louse (you should see my waistline) !!!

Ps Don't think about dieting for the first few weeks - I set myself another challenge to help me keep going - to eat my entire body weight in chocolate - which has of course left me with a couple of other issues that I need to sort out, but it is worth it !!
PPS OH A - a bladder infection is the very worst thing in the world - and no cigs to help you feel better. Are you drinking gallons of cranberry juice - will help to speed up your recovery. Thanks to this fantastic site and it's amazing people, we have paid over £63, 000 off - just over half way!!!:T THANK YOU:T0 -
Hi FC
Welcome to the thread and deciding that you want to stop smoking :T
You will find tons of support on here (weekends can be a bit quiet), we all know what you're going through and will be there when you need to chat/rant etc..
Check out the first post on this thread and go through the links on there. The one that Tilly mentions is a good one and has helped tons of people. It's the SilkQuit meter which every time you switch your pc on it tells you how many fags you've not smoked, how long for, how much you've saved etc. etc. I haven't got it unfortunately as I've been a closet smoker for many years and if I downloaded it on my laptop at home I might give the game away :rotfl: also doubt my boss would be too impressed if I download it at work. Watch the Max Kirstein smoking video, the links on the first post - that might give you a bit of a wake up call, especially when you've got kids I think.
Good luck, I probably won't be around until tomorrow now cos the washing/ironing/shopping/cleaning etc. etc. is calling me, but I will try to pop back later and see how we're all doing.
Adz, hope you feel better soon hun
