Lidl: still a 'deep discounter'?

The only things Lidl is expensive for IMO are cleaning products, toilet roll and crisps and biscuits. These I get from Home Bargains. They are great value for cheese and ham and fruit and veg and their frozen stuff is really nice.0
-
Even if they are getting more expensive what is the alternative? I can't get everything from the market.
Aren't they still the cheapest of the cheap? If not do tell 'cos I could do with reducing my bill more.
I definitely think ASDA is more expensive if not the same price for most things. Their quality is better in Lidl. For my basket anyway.
It sounds as if it does depend on the management of the store as to freshness.0 -

You're right - the alternatives are limited. At least you are lucky enough to live somewhere close to a market, to pick up whatever you can from there.
I guess the only other alternative is to turn your back garden into a veg patch, have your own chickens etc. I hope to move house in a couple years time, and intend to keep an eye out for somewhere with the potential to do this. I would love a greenhouse too, to grow my own tomatoes, peppers etc.
Over this past few weeks, I have however learned to understand and appreciate that Lidl remain comparatively cheaper than the big supermarkets, so I'm sticking with them in the meantime :-)0 -
Hi I have found this thread out as we have had a new lidl opened but I need to go to tesco before I will get chance to go there, I usually get value flour from tesco as it's 45p for 1.5kg so was wondering the cost of lidl flour? Thanks in advance if anyone can help0
-
Hi SarahSarah, not sure as I'm using up my existing flour supplies before trying out Lidl's; hopefully someone else will be along to answer, if not I'll keep an eye out for the flour prices next weekend and post them.0

Have continued to compile my list of lidl prices, for the purpose of planning my grocery spend each week ... have added a few more items below, plus ratings of each product I have tried so far.
These ratings are all IMO btw, I have seen others rating the Bixies cereal as superb, yet I couldn't stand it!
Ratings ... IMO
5: outstanding taste/quality, comparable to luxury supermarket/label brand
4: good taste/quality, broadly comparable to supermarket own label prouct
3: average taste/quality, !enough to justify buying again, but nothing special
2: poor taste/quality, recommend to avoid!
1: extremely poor taste/quality, avoid!

Watch out for the 30% off stickers.I was fortunate to go in on Friday just has he was discounting the deli.
E.G. cooked chicken down from £3.99 to £2.66.
The oranges last weekend were 1.5kg for 84p and the strawberries this weekend were on offer £1.50 rather than halfprice £1. Not sure of the weight but looked scrumptious.0 -

Thanks Ken, will definitely look out for those, I already buy meat/poultry/fish whoopsies from M&S, and they tend to sticker their items first thing in the morning. Around what time do Lidl tend to discount each day?0 -
Don't know Blackbelle, but guess they clear the decks for half price weekend so probably on the Friday late afternoon to 8pm.Have seen beef mince down to £2.17p kg after discount. Tesco bananas still 79p against Lidl 68p and Lidl pineapple still 99p.
Lidl would be on a winner if they started selling fruit and veg "not all the same size", so as to end waste. Would have to be packeted to stop customers doing the grading.0 -
In case anyone else is interested 1.5kg bags of flour are 55p so 10p more than tesco value flour. I only spend £35 this morning but I am sure some of the things I bought were more that i usually pay, I will have to check my reciept against the tesco website.0
