Lidl: still a 'deep discounter'?

  • Since the middle of last year I have been converted to Lidl, I think it's great value and the quality is good too. I also especially like the fact that I can nip round it and do my shopping in 10/15 mins or so :). Even my Kids prefer going to Lidl !!

I think the fruit and veg is really good value when compared to the other supermarkets. I buy all our 'staples' from there such as bread, milk, cheese, ham for sandwiches, fruit/veg, pasta, rice.

The weekend offers are good too :D

If it was seven or eight years ago then the exchange rate between the Euro and Sterling may be involved - there was a significant shift a few years ago that tightened the difference.
  • Sign up to Lidl's weekly email newsletter, that way the weekly/weekend offers will be in there with prices and you can then do a shopping list or compare.
Also on the website you can add item into a "shopping list" and print off to take with you but usually only the current offers.
  • I've decided to compile my own list of 'normal' Lidl prices (including NO special offer prices as they cannot be relied upon from week to week), as I will find it impossible to plan within my budget otherwise.

This is the only disadvantage that I can perceive so far, of shopping with Lidl. I am so used to making up online shopping lists on mysupermarket, then shopping instore from the list.

Below's what I got so far, based on one shop and a bit of digging around Lidl website. I appreciate there might be a few regional differences and that prices will fluctuate up and down, but I need something to work from, to try and stick to my budget.

Anyone who would like to add to the list, feel free to quote, then add or correct :j

I love fact can leave hubbya nd kids in car and whizz round lilds.
Know where everything is the staff are good never allow queues like sainsburys.

Hubbys huge fan of skinny peppers he doesnt like normal peppers yes hes odd.

They cheapest for milk other than farmfoods.

    Their cheese selection good.

    baby products and household good.

Meats red tractor and free range chickens

Prefer aldis for cereals, frozen, bigger homebake section and drinks.

new aldis opens next week so lilds and aldis practically be next door well morrsions i middle means can easily do both.

Thanks for tip over spring onions.

The qualitys better than supermarket value ranges which keep increasing in price.

my local lidl is pretty good for fruit and veg too. i buy the chestnut mushrooms (74pish) and blueberries (99p) and cannot get them cheaper anywhere else. I have noticed the very slight price hikes like on the bread and cheese but I always get the weekend deals and stock up when things are on offer so cant complain.

don't forget to store spring onions in a glass of water on the windowsill NOT in the fridge. On the windowsill they'll keep growing. In the fridge they go soggy

Also works for lettuce. Cut a small bit off the bottom and put the whole lettuce in a bowl with a small amount of water. Check every few days to make sure there is water left , and if the bottom "heals up" , scrap it over to re-expose the green core.
Will keep in the fridge for at least a couple of weeks.
  • Some additions to my list of Lidl prices, from another shopping trip.

I am learning that the prices don't look THAT much cheaper than the big supermarkets, when you look at them in isolation, but that when you have a pile of items in your trolley, the savings, especially with the special offers, soon add up!

Why would you buy Spanish Choriso at £10 kg.
If you gonna buy fat, buy BRITISH fat.
