I tried to not use the throttle/brakes but inevitably I did have to....
I was doing 100mph at one point (M3) this as well....30/40mph run home from one fuel station i can average 62 - 67mpg.
Several roundabouts and traffic lights also.
Yep I can get 68 on a clear Motorway at 70ish...in summer. but in my car traffic lights and such (anything forcing a complete stop) are the killer for my daily commute. (Obviously 10-0-10-0-10 on a motorway or A road are just as bad)
Its a 3L so it does burn more fuel than say a 1.9D to get the torque back I lost as well as the momentum of the car itself from 0-50.
Its in some ways a quandary.... as you pointed out different temperature and the engine wasn't completely cold when I got in (parked for 5 hours or so inside) vs usual morning situation of 12 hours parked outside.... (and the 3L D keeps the heat a long time)
So if I want to really find out I need a few trips at 5 degrees in 'best conditions' as this is the only yardstick I have to measure....
It might give exactly the same in heavy traffic ....
So even if it does work out better in best conditions (its max 10p/day on my present commute) it doesn't mean better in all conditions.... nor in summer....and did the 1/2 tank actually make a difference or not???? Was it down to temp or road conditions???
The only way I can really test seems to be several tanks worth of each in a row.... and some deliberate trips where I'm not going to be impeded (like down the M3 at midnight).... BUT if Im saving 10p/day max doing any trip just to find out is going to blow away a years advantage..... (say £20)0 -
I use V-Power diesel all the time - first started with my old Vectra, the fuel economy improved from 47.5mpg to 49.2 mpg, both yearly averages.
My current Laguna dCi has always been run on it since I've owned it. Did try with standard Shell but it felt rough and was less responsive.
Quite happy spending the extra £0.08/litre as I think it does keep your engine and fuel lines cleaner.EX-DFW, NOW AN MFW!! O/S Mortgage = £71004 on 12/01/13 Overpaid 2013 = £1000

If you really want to keep your engine clean just change the oil and filter."Retail is for suckers"

Why not buy the cheap fuel, and if you really want additives buy some and add them yourself for 2 or 4 pence a litre?0 -
Diesel fuel is an excellent cleaner - you can use it to clean coked engine parts. And no premium additives / fairy dust are needed to keep your diesel fuel system clean - the only two mechanical engine parts that unburnt diesel is touching are the inside of fuel pump and injectors, and diesel fuel cleans and lubricates them both. Even diesel fuel filter (usually) looks brand new after 50K miles of "non-premium" diesel.
If you really want to keep your engine clean just change the oil and filter.0 -
Okay... well I didn't see a noticable improvement. Got 44mpg compared to 42mpg on the previous fill... which is probably just down to driving style and conditions as most of my driving is local, thus start/start all the time.0
