  • I think you have just made a donation to Shell. I have been tracking my mpg for 63k miles and twice have used Shell v power diesel. The first time was deliberate to see if there was a lot of difference; the mpg was marginally higher than the last fill but not enough to cover the extra pennies. The second time there was no difference at all. I think there should be a warning on the pumps, the ones I use you have to look very carefully to notice the difference. I think the warning should read; Thankyou v much for your contribution to our £18.1 billion yearly profits - we feel the difference even if you can't!

If you read the full annual report you'll see downstream is a trivial amount of their yearly profits - ( from memory, I think they spend more on research worldwide than they make profit from pump sales..... )

10p/litre difference for 1p/litre additives is probably quite significant. They are probably almost doubling the profit per sale...

Good to see someone admiting a mistake on here. Rare!

The video shows they don't though. They even explain that is the reason they use seperate tanks because the fuel will mix so unless you completely drain the car of fuel and flush the lines you will always get a mix that produces a different result.

Who notices 0.6 of a bhp? You'll get more of a power change from ambient temperature I would expect as the car should take account of denser cold air.

In summary, unless mapped for it/desinged to run on it/used exclusively then these things are a waste of money in terms of increased performance.

Also the chap that told me that one tank of bad stuff would affect several tanks of good stuff it is this guy www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk

One of the best mappers of Subaru's in the world and the builder of the fastest Impreza on the planet with a sub 9 second 1/4 mile time hitting 164mph in the process.

I think I'll accept his word on it!
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

I can feel the difference in my car, with momentum 99 the car is far more eager than using 95 ron or even 97 Sainsburys fuel.Sainsburys 97 burns like 95.
We are just going to have to agree to disagree.

Happy with that. Having done several quarter mile things and had a lot of tuned cars, including a Scooby specifically mapped for Tesco 99 I know it can 'feel' different but the god honest truth is shown by 5th Gear - they add minimal extra power if you are lucky so any feeling that 2bhp is going to shift a tonne of metal any quicker is purely a placebo effect.

My usual commute I get 50mpg .(in optimum traffic)... so I decided to see what I could get with V-Power.... (as an experiment)
So far I have had meetings at the wrong time..(I usually go in at 06:00 and come home at either 16:00 or 19:00 to avoid traffic and working at home)... :( but I'm hovering closer to 45 MPG on each trip...

I can't see optimum beating the 50-51 target I usually set..
Even if it does it's possibly only going to be 1MPG or so.....so not economic on the price of fuel....
Hmmm..... now I'm confused, almost 30 litres into the tank I just drove home (normal commute route) in reasonable but not optimal conditions and got 54 MPG ???

This involved a fair bit of less than optimal (40 on M25 and a few lights against me) but 3MPG or so more than my usual in optimal????

    I am....
I do 31.2 miles each day at the moment...
At 1.39/l and 50 mpg that means it costs £3.94 on normal
At 1.49/l and 54 mpg that costs £3.90 (4p less)
At 1.49/l and 55 mpg that costs £3.84 using VTECH
    or a saving of 10p/day

Assuming my best is usually 51 MPG and I got 54 today in less than optimum it might be up to 10p/day cheaper for me on VTECH ....

    Except it was warmer today...

40mph you should be able to average over 60mpg. It should be able to pull along at that speed with very little throttle usage.

30/40mph run home from one fuel station i can average 62 - 67mpg.
Several roundabouts and traffic lights also.
