Hello all
before I begin, I know its joke of a car...
I've a city rover style 2005 which I've had for 2.5 years, 19,000 miles on it, I'm the second owner.
Been great untill basically the last few months where I would find it would suddenly drop some power/speed whilst driving. Not much but enough that I could feel it. MOT and service 2 weeks ago all fine, he couldn't find the reason for the drops, the diagnostic computer thingy (I'm not good with car stuff) couldn't find a fault. It needs a new oil filter which he couldn't get initially but has ordered in.
Anyway the past few days its gone significantly worse, speed droping rapidly and suddenly. Occasionally it splutters as I'm idling say at the lights, and I have to restart it. This morning almost went to a standstill which prompted lots of beepnig etc from other road users, managed to get into work but it also smelt of burning briefly.
The mechanic (2nd one of two I've tried) just hasn't been able to find out whats wrong with it, no check engine lights or anything like that. I just can't beleive its dying on me at under 20k mileage.
Is it just the curse of the city rover?

It could be a coil pack starting to fail, but any competent mechanic should find that quite easily.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0
-
I would agree with above, can be intermitant.0
-
You could try looking for faults in the "Tata Indica" as it is basically the same car.
The engine is an old peugeot unit so coil pack sounds pretty likely, or anything electrical come to that :-)0 -
If it is the coil it will be worse when cold or damp - and it might be an idea to change the HT leads at the same time.0

My mechanic has a very simple process for situations like this.
Plugs
Leads
Coil Pack.
ie, cheapest first, and if neither plugs or leads cure it, then put a coil pack in.
Just did a quick check - this is showing up as fitting a cityrover - might be worth investigation

i wouldn't rule out a dirty or broken crank sensor?0
-
Thanks for all your replies, I will definately ask about the coil and also the crank sensor. On the list for the service the coil hasn't been replaced so I will speak to him later.
It has, shall we say, 'character' but its served me well so far so I'm just praying it can be fixed!0 -
not the crank sensor, but maybe look at teh Throttle Position Sensor/idle sensor (same thing different names)0

If it's had a proper code read duff plugs or coil pack would have been stored as general and specific cylinder misfire. Sounds more like the MAF, which doesn't leave a code unless there is a break in the circuit continuity.0

i had a city rover that i share with my mum and in the 8 years of owning one it broken down once which was down to the battery leaking.
i think i escaped the curse0
