Hello all
Thought I would post a quick update. Basically the rover is back running again, it took a conference of local mechanics and ex rover employees in the pub but seems to have done the trick.
As I understand it, and this is very basic, it was to do with the fuel and oxygen mix. Its been adjusted now so more oxygen is getting through and I haven't had the same problems. I'm rubbish with cars but its akin to older cars having the choke to control this.
I will get the proper terminology and update later just in case someone does a search and has the same problem.
Been a nightmare to get this sorted, no one could figure out its problem! I think its virtually worthless now anyway
I've been offered a 10 year old micra and dithering on whether to go for that, as at least you can get the parts etc.0 -
good that it is finally figured out.
How much was the damage?0 -
Actually he didn't charge me anything for the labour, which was very kind, and I did try to insist. Once he had figured out what needed to be done, I think it was a simple disconnection job.
Its been, touch wood, working fine since and even running a bit smoother, drove a good few hours on the motorway the other day with no issues either.0 -
try http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/ they seem they seem to do coils and filters for yours0

To be fair, it was virtually worthless when new.
The car helped hammer the final nails into MG Rover's coffin.0 -
By disconnection, do you mean he just disconnected the MAF and the car is running on its default settings? It sometimes works fine but can just drink fuel.0

I would replace/check the plugs, leads and coil pack as suggested above as a first step.
If that doesn't work I would definitely recommend seeing if it has a crankshaft position sensor (also mentioned above). I had one go on a golf GTi of similar design age to your car's engine. All of the above symptoms would fit that - though I would expect such a problem to be recognised by the diagnostic.0 -
Hi, my city rover style has been doing this for 18 months now. Unfortunately it just sees to be something it does! I've fitted new leads, coil pack, plugs, fuel filter, fuel sender unit (which didn't fix the juddering and dragging, but did fix the knackered fuel gage!) and nothing works. Every time I think it's fixed it starts doing it again!
What I have noticed though, is the dragging/pulling only happens after I've been driving in relatively heavy rain, and then it only lasts for a couple of journeys after and the juddering/feeling of it cutting out only happens after I've been driving in really really heavy rain, which again only happens for a couple of journeys after. To be honest it's only died a death on me once and that was my fault as the juddering caused me to panic, stall it and subsequently flood the engine! And it is just something I've learnt to grin and bear!
I've had numerous mechanics look at it and they all say that unfortunately its simply the joys of having a city rover!!0
