Flight delay compensation, all other EU airlines

Hello all.
Wondering if anyone can advise on flight delay compensation for a delayed flight that my father experienced last year.
He flew from Birmingham to Shanghai via Amsterdam on KLM. On the return journey, the flight from Shanghai to Amsterdam was delayed by 4 hours 51 minutes due to engine issues. Due to this delay, the connecting flight from Amsterdam to Birmingham was missed. This resulted in about a days delay, for which the airline provided a hotel and put people on to the flight the next day.
Now, I'd read a bit about the flight delay compensation but dismissed it because the issue occurred in Shanghai. Recently had an email from TripCase who say we might be entitled to claim. Now I can see that they seem like the kind of site that will take a cut for doing some of the work but I'm happy to do the leg work myself.
Before I get the ball rolling and maybe make a fool of myself - would this delay be eligible under the compensation scheme?0 -

Thanks. On a quick skim of the document, seems like it might be possible. Will read in detail later.0

Hi Everyone,
I went on holiday to Greece from Manchester Sept 2015 and had a 3+ hour delay. I have checked on Martin Lewis website and Citizens advice and as far as I can see myself and my partner are due 400 euros each. After waiting since September last year from a reply from this Small Planet I have today received an offer from for 400 euros for both myself and my partner. I am tempted to refuse this and advise I would like this each but am unsure. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers0 -

If they are offering you something then they know they are liable. Push for the full amount you are legal entitled to. Although the amount depends on the distance of your flight. Have you checked distance? If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide

Thanks JPears. I thought the same. Yes I have checked and we were over 3 years late from when we arrived and the aircraft door opened.0 -
