Why Is There Not Much Help For Binge Eating Disorder (and if there is, where is it?)

May I humbly suggest that you were doing it wrong? You can have huge portions of veg on Atkins. You need protein and fat and eating them is what helps you feel sated (especially at first) but it doesn't have to be all steak and whipped cream LOL. Just major on the dark leaf veg, courgettes, cauliflower etc.
In that case, yes I probably was doing it wrong!
I think my problem, as I have mentioned before, is that I have done so many different diets in the past, I end up getting confused. I normally like to think of myself as quite an intelligent person, but all the different bits of info I have inadvertently stored in the past re: food has just addled my brain!
I have just been looking at the spiralizer again. DH often does a king prawn and noodle stir fry which is tasty but he uses egg noodles. I also think pasta dishes can be quick and convenient so thinking it would come in handy to make courgette spaghetti and then can use different creamy sauces!
I did love cauliflower mash and love cauliower cheese too so could look at low carb cheese sauce. I do like spinach also, but it doesn't seem very 'substantial' like a good cabbage or something!0 -
DS2 loves making courgette noodles LOL, he giggles with delight as they come twirling out. Cabbage is great, and my local market has a veg stall where they sell sprout tops when in season, they're yummy

Something I keep planning to do is work out if it's possible to thin down my cheesy cauliflower mash into a cheese sauce. It's fine making it with cream but it does get a bit pricey when you're feeding 6, which I regularly do on a Monday when there's band practice - great to have a houseful but...
Anyway I use pureed veg to thicken my stews/ bolognese rather than cornflour (shopping every day isn't an option so I use tesco basic frozen mixed veg which is largely broccoli and cauliflower, puree it in my whizzy machine and dollop it in). Has a major advantage of looking nothing like what it really is to my veg phobic family
And pureed onion and veg is my std base for curry sauces.
I don't actually follow Atkins because I don't like their reliance on artificial sweeteners and other processed foods, but their food list is a good aide memoir. http://uk.atkins.com/program/phase-1/
And you may not want to follow something as rigid as Atkins induction, just sticking to the basic principles of low carbing is often enough for people to experience gentle weight loss. Another good tip is to eat slowly, apparently it takes about 20 minutes for the 'I'm full' signal to get back to the brain.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Again, thanks!
Yes I imagine it can get very expensive with lots of mouths to feed. I know what it's like and 2 of mine are small!
I think Atkins might be a good framework to try again. I had mentioned SW original plan and using Healthy Extras as milk cheese and dairy but the restriction there is things should always be fat free!
I don't like the artificial sweeteners etc either. I did SW numerous times and the reliance on so called healthy 'muller lite' yoghurts and such things really shock me now. I used to eat so many of them believing them to be healthy...when in fact, they're full of aspartame! I watched that programme on weight watchers tok and my eyes were opened by the amount of ingredients in one of their desserts compared with the other ice cream. I know ice cream isn't great but i realise now, if you're going to have it, you're better having one with 4 natural ingredients than the so called healthy one with a page full.
I know with atkins they promote their snacks but I don't think I'd be tempted by them. If I was desperate, I could always use my Cambridge left overs!
I think the other problem i had with atkins was trying to do induction and suffering from carb flu really awfully. Obviously back then, I didn't really have any advice on how to make that better!0 -
One of my main struggles (and I don't know if this will change if I become a low carber) is when I'm tired. I often am too tired to cook and although DH is good, he is quite limited in the kitchen! Also if he makes anything, he is constantly asking me for instructions which means I might as well do it myself! Anyway, it is the times that I am tired that I crave and give in to takeaway etc. how did you get round this, Daska. Did you stop wanting such things straightaway or did you not bother much with them to start with?
What do you do if you're having one of those days? Do you have things ready prepared?0 -
I get round it by making as big a quantity as possible when I do cook and freezing it in portions. There are always things like celery, cream cheese, hard boiled eggs and cooked good quality sausages in the fridge. I rely on the slow cooker a lot and tend to cook bases that can be expanded easily e.g. I'll do a huge quantity of beef shin in a bit of wine and stock which can then form the base of stew, chilli, domoda (add veg, peanut butter and lemon juice). Ditto mince for bolognese and lasagna (sub wafer thin chicken for the pasta) etc. I don't keep biscuits, cereals or bread in the house (though I do have a bag of rice for when the hordes descend). I buy nuts in big bags.
And I have some storecupboard dishes made entirely out of non-perishables such as a thai style curry: two cans each of tomato, coconut milk, one can eazy onions, spices, herbs and nam pla (fish sauce) serves 8. Make the sauce, split it in to portions, freeze the excess and cook appropriate number of pieces of frozen fish in the sauce and serve with a pile of veg -
And instead of rice I make easy side dishes to go with a curry out of the slow cooker. e.g. spicy coconut cabbage (can't find the recipe I usually use but this is close which take very little effort.
Don't get me wrong we do have the odd takeaway and I love curries but whereas I used to get a craving for chips every time I walked past the chip shop it no longer bothers me. To a certain extent it's a question of getting to know the menus because there are some things which are better than others e.g. black bean sauce is better than battered whatever with sweet and sour.Eat food. Just a little update!
I have been continuing to follow low carb (ish) eating! When I say ish, it is only because I am still learning! I have cut out potatoes, pasta, rice, cakes, biscuits and crisps. I have had a few 'slip ups' - mainly because of being away for the weekend last weekend and a couple of other unprepared for occasions.
The main difference is though, I can't remember the last time I binged! I haven't lost any weight but I think that is maybe because I haven't gone low enough on the carbs. I haven't put any on though which is good. I have also had a LOT less bloating.
Energy wise, I haven't really gained much but I think I am noticing a bit of difference which can only be a good thing! How is everyone else doing?0 -

Nice work Oopsa
the weight will come off - the main thing is that you're feeling better!
Am doing OK, lots of weight training, going to try and make a batch of veg soup this weekend

How are you all doing?
I lost some weight although I am worrying about what I lost, bodyfat, water or muscle. I would like it to be bodyfat but not sure how you know.
Only sparkling water for me, however, the craving for fizzy sugary drinks has not gone away, it always surprises me to see posts saying they got over the cravings and then didn't want the things anymore. I still want chips and donar kebabs etc. I saw people today having chips on the street and a group of teenage guys having donar kebabs, my friend couldn't understand why I wanted that kind of food, it doesn't appeal to her at all.
I've cut down on the amount of 90% per cent dark chocolate I was having and on xylitol since yesterday.
I just had a crying session and thought I would search for this thread. And perhaps ramble on.
Edited to add the better I eat the less headaches I get, I used to always have painkillers in my bag and take them on a frequent basis, its much better now.0 -
Hi soph, I have scales that measure body fat, water and muscle, they were from Argos, maybe you could get something like that and weigh yourself once a week to measure your progress. Anyway don't stress too much about weight loss, perhaps if your clothes fit better and you have more energy that is more important.
Why have you just had a crying session?
Maybe try to have things in moderation, you can have chips and doner once a month maybe, or make some chunky chips at home with the skins on and an alternative to doner which is probably quite yucky anyway and you don't really know what's in it....
Take care and look after yourself0
