  • I TOO went for an MRI Scan yesterday and couldn't do it. I really expected to go along, lie down and have my head scanned (ear/throat problem) and drive home again. In fact everything was perfectly OK until I was lying down and the doctor/technician showed me how he would be reversing me into the scanning chamber. The moment my head entered the chamber I completely freaked out and the technician brought me out again. I sat up quickly and was scared witless. I know that I am a bit claustrophobic but it never at all entered my head until I was being reversed into the chamber. We tried a second time but that didn't work either. So they have arranged for me to take some Diazepam and try again next week. I'm pretty sure that no amount of sedative will get me in that chamber again so I am going to have a word with the consultant about getting an open MRI scan arranged. Like Dora I felt like a complete idiot but this MRI-phobia is not as uncommon as you would think.

I had an MRI scan last year to see if my cervical cancer had spread. It lasted 45 mins and they were the longest of my life. It was very noisy but wasn't too bad as I had headphones on and was listening to the radio. I went in feet first as they were scanning my lower body and it was hot in there until the cold air blower started up then it was lovely :D I knew I was going to be moved in and out several times but I got a bit panicky at the going in bit. I had a button to press, if it got too much they would bring me out. I just kept thinking that it was for my own good so had to put up with it. Sitting up again was the worst bit though, my back was killing me laying flat for so long.

i have had lots of mri scans since i was about 12 as i had a severe spinal deformity-yes it was difficult keeping still and feeling alone in that horrid tube with all that noise going on but it was necesarry and i managed to get used to it.Thankfully ive had more than my fair share of surgery and it is in the past now as im 25 now but when i remember how difficult it was i tell myself if you can get through that at the age of 12 then nothing in life is difficult.I had to go in headfirst so tiems have changed if they allow music now-shame ipods weren't invented 10 years ago

Just a quick update - My consultant was very nice about it and though not ideal sent me for a Ultra sound scan on my shoulder instead. Fortunately they could see what they needed to see.....unfortunately I need to have surgery on it for an impingement.

Still no further MRI required :T
  • My Dear Old Dad has them quite regularly (brain tumour). He says he shuts his eyes as soon as he lies down and only opens them again when he comes out. He used to be terribly claustrophobic, but the eye shutting technique seems to work for him.

    Good Luck dora37 :)

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

MRI scan was fine, I had no problem at all.I had music playing although the noise from the machine was vey loud. The scan took about 30 minutes. Just have to wait for results now. Good luck to everyone waiting or results hope all goes well
