I went for an MRI Scan today and couldn't do it!

Thanks everyone - I don't feel too bad now I know I'm not the only one :T
I will ring up Tuesday and make an appointment with the consultant ( I actually know him on a personal level too, so shouldn't be too bad!) - hopefully there will be an alternative way round it.
I think I shocked myself as I am usually quite gung ho! and just get on with things and take them in my stride - whereas with this, I didn't feel I was in control of my feelings....weird!0 -
As tipsychick says above ask your consultant and they should be able to sort you out at an open MRI place although there may be a wait. My job is sorting out MRI's for people and loads of people have the same problem as you so don't worry....ITV Winners Club #87 :eek:0

Hopefully, you'll be able to go into an open one.
My audiologist is frustrated with me, having booked two MRI appointments, and I just can't do it. I know I should, as they want to rule out the possibility of an acoustic neuroma or tumours relating to my genetic mutation, but for now, my hearing is stable. I suppose if I develop any symptoms I'm going to have to bear it.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. I've had a couple, just close my eyes as soon as I'm lying down and breathe gently ... Can't have music, and the racket they make is so loud I'm not sure music would be audible anyway!
I don't know why feet first would be any better: at least my feet and body are still free, I suppose I rationalise that if I HAD to wiggle out on my back I could, whereas if my feet had gone in first they would feel trapped ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Dora,
Ultrasound is a partial alternative for rotator cuff problems. Difficult to interpret after surgery but so is MRI.0 -
i had one as well as an arthrogram & they offered me a sedative as i was so jumpy & scared (as well as knowing how nervous i am anyway!) and because the first time i went in i was twitching uncontrollably!
i found the worst thing was the noise but apart from that it was ok
good luck!nothing to see here, move along...0 -
I agree they are awful. I had one about 10 years ago and still remember what a scary experience it was. My dd is autistic and they wanted to do one on her to see if it shed any light on the causes of autism. Can't think of anything worse for any child never mind one with acute sound sensitivities. Took me all of a nanosecond to refuse on her behalf!
Good luck with finding an alternative. As they're looking at your shoulder for a physical problem, rather than checking for brain tumours or something I would have thought there must be other diagnostic things they can do.0 -
My daughter is supposed to have one for her epilepsy, but they won'tdo a sedated one at our nearest hospital, we have to go from Bude (cornwall) to Bristol for it!The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

:hello:,
I would be scared too of an MRI,in fact I am going to have one on 4th June at 2pm,I am going to be brave though and go through with it,I always have my mum for support while I am in there, first time I had it done I was scared as anything,Mum touched my feet alot so I knew she was there and that relaxed me alot and got me through it and also they played a cd for me as well so I could listen to it while it was being done and within minutes it was all over, going to take a cd this time just in case

i work with MRI machines a bit and so have been a guinea pig in the scanner a few times myself. there should be a mirror attached to a cage thing that you can put your head in (it's not a 'cage' but i can't think of a better description) so that you can see out past your feet - that's how they get people to look a pictures and movies in functional imaging of the brain. being able to see out can make a big difference! i guess it won't necessarily be used when other parts of the body are being scanned but it might help some people feel less trapped in.
my longest scan was just over an hour, so i just fell asleep! best way of deadling with it - they are very very safe!:happyhear0
