Contactless Cards

Just opened a new bank account and they sent me a 'Contactless Card'.
I never came across this before and I certainly did not sign up for it knowingly, if I had been put the option to take it or a normal card directly I would have said 'No Way!'
I presume they have started to default to these cards, but to my mind it is like carrying an extra £80 cash (they allow 4 transactions up to £20 per day on the card with no pin required).
Surely it is bound to attract fraud, either the card gets stolen and used or the owner makes the transactions then phones up and claims it was lost earlier that day.
Also as it operates on close range radio frequency identification these is scope for subtle theft by someone with the necessary equipment to make a transaction.

Man I was furious!

Do you seriously think banks would release something that is so insecure???
As to fraud in over 18 months of customers having these cards. We have only seen ONE case of contactless fraud.
Given that when you think we see plenty of stolen cards weekly. Then its a no issue.
Well there are scare stories around readers and contactless. Again they have to get so close, that its a no brainer..
Get used to them. They are comming to every card provider soon and there will be no option, but to have one.:DNever ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

Yes I think they could release an insecure technology, any security measure can be breached.
They are not noted for their regard for their customers & I know it will probably be impossible to stop.
I also know RFID is v. close range, that doesn't offer a guarantee against an inventive criminal with superior technology.
And as for the low fraud rate that is simply down to low market penetration of the cards, so low opportunity rates.. etc.. more contactless cards = more frauds from them.
As for scare stories, start checking it out..

No point going through all the old arguements as we have been here so many times before.
If you do not like it then vote with your feet and close the account.
End of the day if enough people say no then banks will look at offering them, but Visa & Mastercard are set on releasing them.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
You could just ask to opt out!Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0

I understand that, but I shall vote with my feet as best I can, currently I have one account without a contactless card and one with.
If I can't get a normal card on the 2nd account I'll close it.
And I'll make sure I express my preference to not be issued with them.
PS is dalesrider a banker?0 -

I would contact Barclays maybe worth popping into a branch and advising them you wish to opt out.
