So a single person living in a 1 bedroom is getting rewarded .....
According to gov website
"A full Council Tax bill is based on 2 or more adults living in a household."
So if you have more than 2 adults in the house you are being rewarded also ...Play nice :eek: Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.:j0 -

Except that council tax rewards under-occupation through a single person discount.
Tru, but a single person living in a large house pays more council tax than one who lives in a smaller house next door, (and more than half that of a couple living in the same size house) so I think it's a valid comparison ...0 -

Although not necessarily correct, someone living in a one-bedroom property in London may pay more council tax than a person living in a three bedroom property in the north.
One person living on their own in a two bedroom house pays less council tax than an individual next door living in a similar, fully occupied property.0 -
So if the council tax bill is based on 2 people living in given property then surely the discount for single person should be 50 %. And if more than 2 people live in the house then they should pay a larger amount?Play nice :eek: Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.:j0

There's a reason there are no (or not many) one bed council properties, and that's because a family with children will be allocated a minimum of two bedrooms, and individuals or couples without children are not considered to be in dire need of council housing, as it is presumed that they can rent privately.
Somewhere along the line it has become acceptable for single people or couples to occupy social housing, hence they are generally allocated two bedroomed properties because there are no one-beds in the system.

People had to brick up windows years ago or pay tax on them,we have all seen buildings with some of the windows bricked up,now I know why,so maybe owner occupies with spare rooms are next,it would not suprise me one bit if they checked the size of your house against the electoral register to see how many people live in each property
If they went down this road then it would indeed be an additional tax penalty. This change is a reduction in housing benefit not a tax..
And as an additional tax , it would also be an extra cost to those affected in social housing as well. So as well as losing some HB and having to pay something towards to council tax, they'd also have a new additional tax to pay on top of that.
Fortunately it is unlikely to ever happen. Even if only because of the number in the House of Lords who would be affected by it. lol.0
